Going to collect the Cup today

Yup, the big day has finally arrived...

I am finishing work at lunchtime, then going to my local dealer to get their trade plates, then being driven by my GF to another dealer (where my Cup is) to collect it and bring it back to my dealer for it to be PDId, taxed, registered, etc... then I can take it.

The reason I am having to do this is that if I ordered a Cup from the factory it would be mid september (at the earliest) before I got the car and that was too long for me. So my mate at the dealer got on the system and tried to find me one in stock, and he luckily managed to find a dealer about an hours drive away that had 2 brand new ones in the showroom.

It turns out he knows the sales manager over there anyway, so he got on the phone, did a bit of sweet talking and convinced them to let me have it!

Now I actually volounteered to go with the trade plates and bring it back myself, then some lad from the dealer doesnt drive it over here and kick its t!ts in all the way over and I can also check it all over properly.

Less than 3 hours until I finish work now, so the clock is ticking...

Might not necessarily get to take it home tonight though...

But if not, I still have my mates mk1 172 for a week or so and I have been nailing that about and I can get it out of my system before I get the Cup and take it easy for a few miles just to let it all bed in.

I agree with Mitsi.

Mine had done 5,000 miles when I got it. Have driven the guts out of it ever since. Evidently if you drive it like an old biddy it loses bhp... cant be havin that.

Full throttle all the way.

Hit the limitter every time. Its the only way :D

i ran mine in then after the 600 or so miles i took it to reno for a oil change but they told me it didnt need it but i insisted thet they do it ,

i thought that it would be good for the service history but they would not stamp the log as they said it was not due 1 ,

i kept the receipt and it was dated so i suppose that will do as proof.

have good fun in ur new purchase but remember to check it with a fine tooth comb and give it a drive cos when u leave with the car its hard to get them to take it back. beware

Had 2 172s. Ran one in then didnt bother with the second. I know which one feels much better for it!

Oil change at 600 miles, waste of time. Wait for 3000.

I ran my 172 in for 600 miles then thrashed it, changed the oil to a race spec type at 1500 miles and the car started first time everytime and ran more smoothly for the first mile and warmed up quicker.

Hope everything goes well, I cant wait to get my GTi.

well they would of told you if it needed an oil change before the 12k or 2 years were up, waste of money if you ask me.
At 5000 miles my car had F.A oil left in it and HAD to change it  Its been gunned from day one and did a 14.8 1/4 mile with 1000 miles on it

I had mine changed at 5000 miles. It cant do any harm, other than making my wallet £68 lighter!!

I also took it easy until 600 miles.

We tried that with my mates mk1 172 and it is not as quick as other 172s plus it sounds like a bag of spanners on cold startup, plus I have stripped, re-built & run-in engines in the past and know what they need for a long life, so I will be taking it easy for the first few hundred miles...

was there owt wrong with it when you picked it up?

Im making note for when I colloect mine in a month or so.

Would deffo run it in, there all these mag tests saying the ragged car makes more power (how much 5bhp? Wow). But how old are the cars when they measure them? 5, 10, 15k miles tops. I bet they lose power faster the more miles you do.

Well, I got it yesterday and there were problems straight away....

Went and checked it all over externally and it was good. No marks, bad paint, etc... wheels were un-marked and it was perfect, so I was happy. but then I open the door and immediately something cathces my eye!

The drivers seat has a 3" long slash/scratch down one side of it (been caught by something sharp) so they have ordered a new cover and will be swapping it over for me.

Then I got in and tried to lower the height of the drivers seat, but the lever was disconnected underneath and a mechanic had to come & sort it out.

My "Cup 172" badges on the door pillars were wonky. Well, the metal "Cup" bit was ok, but the yellow "172" underneath was all over the shop and I ended up pulling them off.

Rear number plate is stuck on at an angle!

Front splitter is not clipped on properly.

Car was not totally clean and needs a "proper" wash, inside of the windscreen is mucky and I had to get a duster out and clean/polish all the dash off.

But, they are all minor things and nothing major to put me off and Id rather sort the stuff out myself then I know its done properly.

Initial thoughts are:-

firm ride
very sharp steering
nice seats/seating position (Im a tall git)
good dash/interior (prefer top the mk1 I was in)
colour is great!
superb on fuel (43mpg this morning)
definately has more low end grunt than that mk1
I like...

When my mate got his mk1 172 he decided not to run it in and it was hammered from day one...

But, it has never been as quick as other 172s Ive drive/been in and has always lacked power IMO.

Now at 52k miles it sounds like a f*cking diesel when you crack it up from cold and it has not done it any favours ragging it from new.

The engines in 172s can & do vary a lot, so you either have a good un or a bad un and thats the way it is...

Sounds good mate added them to my list, its sad I know!

Good to here about the seating position- Im 62" and dont fit in my saxo, so decided on a cup gives me about an inch of head room rather than the -2inches in the VTR.

One other thing!! If i put my fog lights on when driving the saxo I get at least another 50bhp does this work in the cup?!!

Ive had a 106 GTi (aka Saxo) in the past and theres more room in the Clio

Fog lights are g@y and mine might well get removed!

Cool.

We went last year for the "full" 3 day experience and will be doing the same this year...

Depending on how many miles Ive done by then I will probably be running it up the strip.
