Gonna have a go at doing head gasket, dephaser and timing belts tomorrow.............

The 172 is sounding very lumpy/unhealthy on tick over and low revs and on 130k ive decided to have a go at replacing the dephaser pulley and timing belt myself tomorrow and have decided that as I've already got a head gasket and bolts set in the garage I'd do that as well while the cams are out!

What are the Renault Tools I need for the timing as I'll be buying them from the dealers tomorrow unless someone's willing to lend them to me for a couple of days?!

I know they are MOT**** but not sure which ones as Renault list loads but I'm sure I only NEED to buy 3 or 4 them!?

You need 3 tools mate (not sure of the MOT numbers though). Crank locking pin, horse shoe (timing) and pulley locking tool. By the time you buy them you pay more than you would for getting someone to do it for you now you've bought the kit/dephaser/gasket and bolts.

TDC/Crank Pin - 0000105400 - £8.98
Extra Longer Cog + Spacers + Nut - 0000150901 - £16.56
Camshaft Locking Tool - 0000149600 - £40.50
Pulley Locking Tool - 7711381801 - £40.50

Its also handy to have the correct tools for tapping in the various seals as well that you get in the full kit, plus the handle to easily turn it all over etc.

Prices might not be up to date. Copied the part numbers from a different thread. Shoul be around the 150 mark these days.

I agree. I've done a couple in the past (punto and a 205), but there's certain engine's I wouldnt touch unless I was way more experienced. Id always have a read up on them first and knowing what's been posted on here about things such as cam belts etc on a 1*2 engine, I would attempt one.

Wounld it one be cheaper to get a 2nd hand engine.

Oh have a little faith Yeecup, how hard can it be to change a belt after all?!

Its certainly not rocket science, just fiddly and annoying when you arent well practiced at it.

I've only done it with the engine out and it was ok by following the correct procedure and using the correct tools. Think it would be a different story doing it in situ for space and vision.

Yeah it's a piece of cake out the car, just fiddly in the car.
