Good service from Dell support

I know alot of people dislike Dell for technical support but today I've had a good experience with them.

Phoned up about a fault with a laptop we have at work and got through to someone pretty much straight away. The guy was as friendly as anything and was scottish instead of somewhere in india. He said that the laptop was out of warrenty on 15th Jan but he put me on hold to speak to his supervisor.

He came back said that as it was only a week or so out of warrenty they would come out and replace the motherboard anyway, for free as a good will gesture.

I thought this was nice as they could have easily turned round and said tough its out of warrenty.

This was dell premier business support btw, don't know if that makes much difference than usual?

The premier business support goes through to Dublin afaik, they're pretty helpful indeed.

I had a fking nightmare with Dell today at work, blown motherboard. Got cut off like 3 times, then the next person couldn't understand a word I was saying, took me like 3 hours to get them to confirm they were sending out an engineer tomorrow.

Usually ok with Dell but today I could have strangled the plebs!

So after calling them 3 times and stating my service tag and business name, I get through to someone....who also asks for the fking service tag (they couldn't even take it down on phonetics correctly) and business name, my name, my number, my address, my grans name...

Well i've come to the conclusion that something, probably the onboard video has fried. I've tried multiple monitors, swapped out for donor parts, and checked the motherboard for damage, I see a few bulging capacitators.

OK SIR PLEASE RUN THE IDE TESTING DIAGNOSTICS ON THE BOOTING UP OF PC, AND TELL ME WHAT SAYS

No, because the HD is absolutely fine and it works in another machine, the motherboard is at fault here, and i'd like an engineer.

PLEASE CAN YOU TELL ME IF THE LIGHT ON THE BACK IS GREEN OR AMBER, IF THE LIGHT IS FLASHING...

Blahhhh annnyway after 30 minutes of me getting mad, they diagnose a motherboard issue.

Tech support from Dell is good, but that the only thing and thats the problem.

I have had loads of Dell laptops - none of them have had problems [cant count windows XP failing as a Dell problem ;)]

I currently have 2 x Dell laptops at home setup in a wirless network.... and I have one to work on my systems @ work too.

what was the problem with the motherboard mate? I've had a sound driver play up for a while now, it works sometimes then doesn't the next, I've uninstalled it etc reinstalled from dell site etc but still plays up. Warranty lasts until June sometime so Im starting to think get it sorted. I just don't want to have it taken away as there's loads of music on there.
 
had 2 new motherboards from dell today courier turned up at about 10 am after i logged the call at about 2pm yesterday

damn them swolen capacitors

I just need lots of Xeons and lots of RAMs because we emptied half of our 1650s into the other half to get dual processor systems!

Last time I phone dell tech support about a throughput problem on one of my server he asked the the service code etc. then proceded to tell me to edit the registry.... It was about 2 minutes later before I decided to tell him it was a linux server (server shipped with this specidfied).

He then put me on hold and told me I would need to speak to someone else lol..

Completely dead, wouldn't switch on or light up when the psu was plugged in.

Aye, business support = good, home/pleb support = poor. I had a PSU fail on one of our servers. Quick phone call and I had a brand new one on my desk in 2 1/2 hours.
