Got my first 172 insurance quote

  320d
As above. Based on 19, 2 years expeience, 1NCB, IAM and owners club member.

£1554 tpft with Flux. I'm going to try brentacre and a few others tomorrow but I feel thats a decent price to start with and I would pay that if knowbody else beats that.

I know its only tpft but a lot of younger members have done that too, anyway i'm not here to justify that.

Basically i'm happy that insurance is achieveable for only £90 P/A more than my 1.2 and i'll be on the hunt for a ph1 ready for the end of August.

you woudn't want it tpf&t though, you'd be seriously gutted if you had a crash then £3-4k down the drain, I'd be looking for fully comp if i were you, or waiting a bit longer for some more NCB

wasnt having a go, and didn't mean to sound like a nob! I paid about the same as that for a 1.4 saxo a few years ago, so it is a good quote for a 172.

Doesnt seem cheap mate, mine was 1800 FC at 19 with a modded 182.

Tell Flux it's modified though, opens up specialist insurers and it's a lot cheaper, just ask The Boosh on here, he saved well over a grand on my advice of modifying it. All it needs is a panel filter, saved me tons too on both my Lupo and 182.

TPFT is ok though if you dont plan on crashing!
I'm only TPFT on the DC2, I wouldnt claim and lose my no claims if I stack it, so why pay 500+ extra for the privelidge?

You'll finally be able to give proper advice on them if you actually drive one too ;)

I forgot to add thats on a modified policy with exhaust and phase 2 lights and rub strips.

Also thats with 2 Non-fault claims on the policy too.

Pepsi - I'm the same as you, wouldn't claim and am a careful driver anyway, accidents do happen though but if the worst comes to the worst i'll just break it for parts.

My biggest advice brett would be make sure you can afford it long term.

Dont scrape together for the car and insurance, make sure you're financially comfortable. Also make sure it's a 172 that you really really want, speaking from experience they have an awful lot to go wrong with them, no more than any other french car but it's still a french car. If you're going to have to take it to a garage to have work done you will get anihilated.

Since buying my 172 with full renault service history (60k) I've had to buy an injector, bits of loom, tdc sensor, cambelt cover, alternator arm, two aux belts, battery, whole set of engine mounts, exhaust and now clutch and gearbox rebuild.

Was 19 at the time and I scraped together to buy the car and have been in a very bad position with money ever since.

They're f**king fun cars but you'l always want more power, in hindsight I would have bought something sorted with all the work done, a 182, or a fast car that's had all the hard work done already.

Well i'vr already though about this, I won't be scraping together, i've done a fair bit of saving will have a fair bit of spare money too.

I know what you mean though, things can go wrong, all I can do realy is ensure I get one with belts done, FSH and drives well because things can go wrong with any car. Some people have a nightmare with 1*2's others drive them forever with no major issues.

If it constantly goes wrong i'd just sell up and buy something else to be honest.

I have an 04 plate 182, i insured it last year when i was 19, i had no ncb and it was the first car i had insured in my name. I had my mum and dad on the policy and it was only £980 fully comp with admiral, this year it is down to £760.

Thats a very good price. Ive been looking at a 55 Reg 182 and it will cost me about 1800 to get insured at 19 with 1yr ncb. Thats fully comp aswell. :)

Theres that & the rawness of them. Saying that the one i drove was Grays track **** so can't really comment on a std one. His seemed to hit the limiter instantly. Rapido! How ever i love the creature comforts of the 182.... And when rolling its not THAT slower than grays :DThe thing that also appeals is you can strip them/cage them/rag them without feeling like your ruining a nice car.

I'm after a ph1 because I don't want to have to stretch to afford the car tbh. I like the fact I can attempt to work on it myself without worrying about resale value etc so I can learn aswell.

I'm looking forward to the rawness of a ph1 however the main thing i'm dreading is the hastle of selling my car and then buying a ph1.

I will definately not rush into one, if I do it could turn into a moneypit. I'm after one that is generally mechanically sound i.e. FSH, good gearbox and clutch. Providing nothing goes wrong with the engine or transmission theres nothing else too serious. If dampers etc go i'll get coilies which is a long term plan.

I'm not going to throw too much money into mods though, want to make sure i've always got a completely spare £1K just for the car incase anything goes wrong.

Update: Brentacre want £2400, ChrisKnott said they would love to beat the quote but couldn't because I had no previous experience on a performance car.

Also directline came back with the renewal on my 1.2 @ £1127.

Looks like flux will be the best option at the minute.
