Nah, linux installs onto the PS3 hard drive as an 'other os' which you can then boot into, you could set up remote shares eg have a 10TB file server and map those drives into the PS3 which will use them kinda like a windows mapped drive.

Full blown media centre.. !

If you're running windows then I'd definitely recommend you try Tversity first of all which will allow you to play most media types directly from the XMB.

i have tried using http://www.redkawa.com/videoconverters/ to convert a video file to mp4 and then put it on my 8gb sony usb drive and it didn't recognise it, not sure if its the formatting of the drive though?

so then i used WMP to connect to the ps3, that showed pics but as i'm on a wireless B laptop i couldn't stream video plus it would do mp4 either for some reason. So then i tried the vaio media thing and got the same thing, so i thought, i need to connect via ethernet, got a crossover cable out, plugged it into the ps3 and into my laptop and nothing happened. The laptop doesn't recognise ti has a cable in it and nor does the ps3, not sure what to do now, but stuck. Home Networking is not my forte.

Even if i tried tversity i need to ge this cable working to be able to stream.

Any ideas?

I swear the Hoff is on SCEE's payroll, lol. I like my xbox360 for the games but it's a steaming pile of turd when it comes to build quality and as for microshat dont get me started on them.

I do want a PS3 however at the current price i just cant justify it. If it was £350 then I'd have bought one. This is not an invitation for the Hoff or other fanboys to bombard me with spec and the merits of the PS3 as I'm well aware of them. The fact remains most people will use it primarily as a games machine, and for that it's pricey. It still doesnt have many "this gen" titles out and those worth getting are even fewer.

using it as a media player, install yellowdog linux and it becomes a full system allowing you to install apps, proper browser, keyboard, mouse and play any media files etc.

The possibilities are then endless.
