Grado Appreciation

  Clio 200 Cup
I cant make my mind up about them.

Heard HF-2's and GS 1000's and I honestly don't like the 'sound signature' on Grado cans.

Im a metal fan (Thrash mainly) so these should suit my music tastes but they simply dont.

Im not saying theyre crap, but Id sooner have a set of good beyerdynamic, Denon or AKG's

I also listen to a lot of metal amongst other things (mostly European thrash/melodic death). Tried my Dads Sr60's and while the sound was incredible I found the headband to be a bit over zealous in how much it wanted to clamp the cans to my head and they became very uncomfortable very quckly which is a great shame. What do you use at home as I am looking out for a replacement set for my old cheap n nasties?!

Hmm, I might look into some in ear ones. Any recommendations?

Has anyone tried the iGi in ear headphones? Currently rocking the normal Apple ones.

Yes, they're what I'm using at the moment and they're fantastic. Quite how such a small and inexpensive set of headphones can produce such sound with authority is beyond me. They sound quite thin and trebly until they bed in but it's well worth the wait. I worry that the cables are flimsy and will break but I guess that if they are treated properly and with respect then they should last the distance. Super lightweight and very comfy but you do get quite a bit of cable rub noise, I was using the supplied cable clip with mine but even with care it exploded within about 2 weeks...

AKG K701 hooked up to an Asus Xonar STX sound card, my source music is FLAC, well most of it.

I have a Cowon S9 with Fiio E11 amp and Westone UM3X and UM2 IEM's for portable use.

Hung up my Grados tonight.

I'll be breaking these in as my walking to work pair. Can't be doing with open backs in public.

Initial impressions are more bass, less depth, tinny mid tones but I'll reserve full judgement til they're fully broken in.

Do headphones need breaking in? I was talking to a Monster headphones sales guy who said you did but I wasn't sure if he was talking crap or not.

Most do yeah.

Wouldnt worry about it too much if youre not an audiophile. If youre buying Monster then Im guessing youre not.

- FYI I am not either.

My beloved pair of Onkyo's packed up a few weeks ago, and I returned them on warranty. With my credit note I've decided to go with a set of Grado SR80i as everyone seems to rate them so highly. I hope you lot aren't wrong!

I was going to go for Sr60s, followed by sr80s but have decided on either AKG 550s or Fidelio X1s! Can't deny the Grado smooth signature and looks though.

Delivered this morning, only had a chance to listen to them for a few minutes but they do sound pretty awesome. Very very clear. Leak tons of sound but I knew they would, so I bought some Denon in ears as well for p**n use :p

Got a pair of SR80i's through amazon just before Xmas, wasn't overly impressed compared to my current PC setup of Sennheiser PC360's. Don't get me wrong they're good, but I guess I expected more - though not sure why considering their price anyway!

The difference is I wanted some for both PC and extended use (outside, work etc), so I've got a pair of Sennheiser Momentum (over-ear) coming instead - maybe they'll be what I'm looking for :)

Got a FiiO portable amp over xmas as well to ensure they get the right amount of gain and aren't too quiet. Sorry to derail from the Grado thread :p

I'm tempted to buy a pair of these this year. Need a decent set of headphones again. Won't be able to go too mental with them though.

Also, ///Munson I didn't expect you to be listening to R. A. The rugged man.
