gti-180 2 172 cup???

  PEUGEOT 206 GTI 180
hi guys not been on here for a while but today i saw a mint 172 cup in blue and ive never felt so tempted to own one!!!

I currently own a 206 gti 180 and i am seriously considering trading her in for a clio cup thats ive seen near me in a dealership! my car is worth 3k more and trading her in would give me more cash each month as the payments would be smaller and i won't be loosing any performance!!

do you guys think i would be downgrading atall?? and would i regret the decision?? i know this is a clio forum and im after an un biased answer but has anyone driven or owned both???? whats the diffrences between them and anything i should look out for???

the car im after is a 53 plate with roughly 40k miles its up for 7.5k but needs two new tyres and there's a small paint scuff to the drivers side rear panel! which im sure i can use as a bargaining tool!

thanks

Spec wise the 172 Cup will be a downgrade, lack of climate. leather etc, the 182 is more comparable inside to the GTi 180.

Driving wise the 172 is a much better IMO, the 180 was the Peugeot that made me turn to Renault apart from the seats I am not a fan of them. Not owned a 180 but drove 3 before I went for the 182.

  F/F Titanium 182
the cup is a great car, seat of your pants sh"t good fun and a bit scary, if your after replacement which is faster with more goodies 182 is the boy and if you don't have have the dough for that a 172....joy!!

youd have A HELL OF A LOT more fun in the cup..

but the 180 seats are gorgeous and it would be a step down in terms of toys.

cup (usually) has no abs, no air con, no climate control, no traction control, manky basic interior, etc..

depends what you like in a car.. fun or a bit of luxury. if you like both then stretch to a 182 with cup packs..

  VX220 - Fiesta RS Turbo
or 172 full fat still be as quick or quicker than a 180 with the toys to go and a little cash on the side as you can get em as chaep as a cup..

in tearms of performance i out run a 180 in my Cup

You'll struggle to get an objective opinion on gti vs 172 on a clio forum - thank goodness for lurkers like me who don't own a clio!
Basically Lee, listen to these clio folk - the 172 is an absolute hoot to drive. In terms of driving fun it's streets ahead of the gti. Personally I think the extra kit on the full fat version more than justifies the extra cost over the cup but this is about personal preference. As far as build quality and reliability goes let's just tiptoe around the issue by saying that the clio is on a par with the 206. ;)
The only downgrade would be the loss of the leather, air con, abs etc if you go for the cup version. Otherwise GTI to 172 is an upgrade all the way.

thanks for the advice chaps i really really wish i could get a clio cup!! its doing my head in!!!. its just sitting there staring at me saying please' please buy me!!!!

All the dealers i spoke to today will only give me 10 grand for my 05 plate immaculate 180!!! and because of negetive equity i can't do the deal and i can't think of another way to get into a clio cup! :dapprove:

any sugestions???

anyone fancy a swap ;) anyway here she is!! taken yesterday!

looks nice mate, wouldnt you be better selling privately then buying privately? even buy one through cliosport, least you will know you are getting a well looked after one!

05 plate?? Best suggestion I can give you is to learn to love that peugeot mate! If you trade in a 1-year old car you'll have to bend over and let Mr Depreciation give you a damn good rogering - you'll be walking funny for months!

LOL

I totally agree, I would keep the GTI 180.

Despite the media stating the 172/182 is a far better motor, i doubt on the road there is a great deal between them in terms of fun and performance.

I think the decision between 172 or GTI 180 by yourself as already been made in the fact that you bought the GTI in the 1st place, I wouldnt bother changing now as you will lose too much money

  Turbos.
Why did you buy the Pug in the first place? Were you not aware of the bad press?

I agree with the others, i'm not sure its too clever wasting so much money on cars. Maybe if you get a few mods you'll fall in love with your 206...

Not that I'm whoring my car throughout these forums, but this basically describes my car, which incidentally, is in the 'car for sale' section at the moment.

Oh, and mine doesn't need tyres and is cheaper.

LOL no thanks ;)

I was going to suggest selling the 180 private to but the cup, but speaking to my mate with a 180 at a Pug meet tonight the 180's are a b**ch to sell at the moment.

Did you not test drive the 172/182s before you brought the Pug?

  MKV Golf GTi (240bhp)
cup with 40k - £7.5!!! bit too expensive in my opinion!! i got my 03 172 with 22k miles for £6.5

if i was you i would be the 172 / 182 privatley and sell yours privatley

just be patient and eventually you'll be able to shift the pug and get a real car!!!!

  is non-existent
i test drove a 180, was quick in a straight line but i just didnt like the way it handled, felt as though every little undulation in the road would upset the balance of the car and it would skip, jump, hop, tramline all over the place, was too unpredictable, the only saving grace for the 180 is defo the interior, the 172 cup interior will seem spartan compared to the 180, best bet is to test drive 1 and decide for yourself weather its worth it

  106 GTi
The 17's on the 180 do it no favours, I hated the way the car felt in the bends, As I did with the 138 but not quite as bad.

  Lux'd Glacier White R26
Just test drive the Cup and see if you fall further in love with it! What a car to drive and own! As everyone has said, the interior is pretty bad, but you dont really worry about that when you're having so much fun!

thanks for the advice guys!. Ive made my mind up and ill just have to wait for now! depreciation is a killer!!!

I did read the bad press yes but considering the 206 came out donkey years ago and they have only just made a real hot hatch out of one is the reason it was in some car tests slated!! the 138 was loved by people and magazines at the time and the 180 is a vast improvement in every department but to late.........

its not the car thats the problem don't get me wrong i love it!! and the performance is plentifull!!, its just my finances have got a llittle tighter hence the reason for geting a cheaper car with the same performance.

My cousin owns a 172 cup and from a standing start race its very very close till 80+ where my 180 pulls very slowly away but never more than two car lenghts. its just the tunability and the handling of the 172 i love and the fact it can be thrown into any corner and out handle most cars!!!
ive owned 3 205 gti's ,2 modified xr2's and the 180 seems big in comparison! oh well maybe once ive cleared alittle more finance i can think about getting the new clio sport!!! :D

  MINI JCW
thats true about the 138 version, i read loads of reviews from when that 1st came out and it was highly rated. It is the more recent reviews what slate it.

Im suprised your GTI 180 is faster than your mates cup though, I thought there would be nothing in it, in fact most mags have the 172/182 a fair bit quicker to 100 (2 or 3 secs in some cases)

  R27 - 77/500
i just bought a cup with 40k for 6.2k, it is a 52 but think if u look about you'll find cheaper one, but then again for the money your gonna lose on gti id keep hold for now.
