GTI 180 in better than Clio 182 shocker

I have today driven a Peugeot GTI 180 and I have to say I was quite impressed. I found the handling much flatter through the corners than my 182, and the engine noise more urgent and sporty as well. I dont think the pick up is quite as good, but its only marginal. The interior is not quite as plush, or as well laid out but the seats are much more hugging (I have been on an all inclusive holiday, so it may be that instead!).

I think I may have to look for some different setup for my 182 (perhaps some Eibachs), because at the moment I dont feel with the amount of body roll that the car drives as well as it should.

Ok, now you can sl*g me off if you wish, but go for a drive in a 180 and decide for yourselves.

Howdy bud... shame to hear about a fello clio being beaten - try the cup against it instead, that will change your mind.

Cool

Just smack some H&R coilovers on the 182 and it will turn into a pretty awesome handling rocket........:D

You are the first I´ve heard saing the pug are better than the 182 thou........I think not!! the clio is far more sporty IMO

Have you got cup suspension on yours bigvin? I struggle to get any body roll out of mine. It always feels more like the tarmac is going to lift off the road before mine rolls at all, and the steering feels better than my kit car (Robin Hood S3 based on a Caterham) which I always thought was brilliant.

I aint drove the gti 180, so it may well be even better...

How much do you reckon that would cost?

Cheers.

I didnt order it from the factory because my dealer said that it could be done when it arrived if I wanted it, and then when it arrived he told me it could only be done at the factory!

Does anyone know if this can now be done, and should my local dealer be able to do it?

About 900 if they are out yet with fitting and set up. If the suspension are the same as the 172 you can get it already........Even cheaper than that but you get what you pay for........

I presume your local Renault dealer wont be able to fit these. I will try and see if I can find a good independent in the Gloucestershire area and see if they can give me a quote.

Thanks Michael. ;)

Oh dear. Heres proof that the Cup pack is worth it.
From what I have read on this forum, the cup pack is better, but only by a touch. For £200, it aint gonna be that good when you consider they charge £300 for bloody Supaguard!

They dont charge me for Supaguard mate. Depends how hard a bargain you drive.

You cant actually compare the 2. Supaguard is pure profits for them as it only costs them £45 + Valeters time.

And I quote Evo:

"bespoke Michelin Exalto 2 tyreswith stiffer sidewalls, a 3mm lower ride height and stiffer springs and dampers than even those fitted to the 172 Cup. At just £200 youd be crazy not to tick the box on the options list."

Its like buying a williams fitted with valver suspension its just not a williams
sell it to some unsuspecting ejit and buy the proper version WITH CUP EXTRAS !!!

I can beleive the 180 is a very good car, peugeot have a better track record than renno do for their sport models! also they must have learnt harsh lessons from their pathetic 1st attempt at the GTI.

I would not believe entirely what EVO say about the 180 IMO they are a bit elitist and if the 182 is deemed "cooler" they will rave about it more. Peugeot and renaults top hatches are always going to be just about inseprable in terms of performance.

If the Gti 180 is better than the 182 id have one.....

But i dont and its a lot more than just Evo who says so which is why i have a 182 ;)

my 2 penneth worth:

i test drove the pug 180, type-r, cooper s and 182, some excelled in certain areas and were let down by others.

182 with cup suspension made me smile and the salesman hang onto his seat.

edited to say: i was going to buy a 182 import from motorpoint till i discovered i couldnt get the cup pack retro fitted.

trust me mate, ive got a mk2 172 which has the same suspension and chasis as the 182 (without cup suspension), and when i test drove the 182 with the cup suspension, the handling was the first major thing i noticed and believe me it does make a big difference imo. For a price of £200 its a bargain.

Hey that 182 with cup pack would almost be as good as my real deal 172 cup! No bits added on to make it better, mine is as pure a handling cliosport as will ever be produced standard! The 182 with cup options is a toned down 172 cup with all the needless things like babyss (abs) xenons and traction control. I wont even get started with the stripes! Alright for a bit of fast road driving but it would lose out in the extreme handling environment of a track where none of these nannying features would help, appart from adding weight and slowing down the responses and lap times. (Waits for the backlash!);)

But the 182 with cup options may be the more civilised of the two on the road which is better for some people, but if you are going to produce a hot hatch, its best to stretch it to its limits in terms of light weight and responsiveness IMO.

However these cars are very close in character, which is why i cant believe we are even arguing about the Pug 180 GTI. It isnt in the same class as a cup or a 182 cup in terms of handling, performance, or value for money, read the evo magazine site <A target=_blank href= "http://www.evo.co.ukwww.evo.co.uk to see how disappointed they are with their longtermer and how much they are missing the clio cup and how much they would rather have a 182 with cup options than a lardy, slow hot hatch pretender! Strong words but these are their and my opinions!

Incorrect. the 182 in std form has a few minor suspension mods over the 172

Have a search.

just had a ride in a friends new 182 with cup pack, the ride is really solid, no body toll at all around a round about... i thought my 172 was stiff, but its awesome, cant wait to open it up in a few weeks when its run in.... p.s. the wheels really do look a lot better in the flesh than in the pictures..

I dont think you can compare the old 206GTI with the new 180.

The gfs old 206gti was absolute sh1te to drive, but Ive never driven a 180, but if theyve given it decent suspension and a decent engine at last it should be a good car. I actually prefered the 206s interior to the Clios.
