Gti 180 vs CTR vs 182

Hi there, new person looking to join the fold. Having owned 2 x 106 gti's

P4230030.gif

and a 306 Rallye
TheEnd.gif

- all modified extensively i might add, for performance and handling . . none of the this looking good bollox lol

Currently have an M Roadster, but relocation to London means i should buy something more sensible for driving to see my girlfriend every week in Cheltenham - a nice 200 mile round trip!

Have now test driven the 206 GTi 180, Civic Type-R and a 182, i knew id always prefer the clio, but thought id drive the other two as comparisons. Here are my opinions on each . . .

206 was very nice, but whilst the Aegean blue colour is gorgeous, I just couldn’t get on with the external looks or the hideous ‘leather’ parts of the interior - seats were excellent though! It pulled well with a smooth power curve, but little in the way of out and out excitement or any noticeable kick in the rev range (and yes it was warmed up), steering was nicely weighted, but felt quite detached and gave poor feedback I thought – no doubt due to the variable assistant malarkey. I decided that it would make an excellent motorway cruiser, but not quite exciting enough to make me lust after one. I think my mums gonna be receiving one soon though, as my dad fell in love with it on the test drive and it looks ‘sporty and nice’ – looks however can be deceiving for those after the biggest thrills, like myself.

Civic Type-R, very comfy, and the gearbox was lovely with good positioning on the dashboard, but didn’t do anything until 10 million revs and the steering was very artificially weighty which I didn’t like. The thing that put me off the most though was that it was like driving a rocket powered Renault Espace, it felt and looked like I was driving a family bus. A good car for a young couple with a newborn child, lots of space and practicality but with decent driving fun for the weekends – great for the guy who refuses to grow old and buy an estate car to please the wife and kids.

Clio 182 ‘full-fat’ with both cup packs. I got in, turned the traction control off and pulled away …. it felt alive, excellent steering, with feedback bombarding you from all angles. Reminded of the first time I drove a 106 gti, just like a go-cart with the potential for much grinning and idiotic driving. Hit 5k rpm and it took off, spinning round to the redline before you realise its time to change gear. Awesome fun and just what I want, im losing the outright speed of my car, but the buzziness and handling ability more than make up for it . . and it’ll cost bugger all to buy & run. Brilliant, im off to find one in inferno orange . . .

Welcome to The Club

I am often around Cheltenham weekdays and have not seen an inferno yet, so will keep an eye out!

Having not driven any of the above...... I think you have made the right choice!

Pretty much what I found and my reasons for going from Pugs to my 182.

Welcome to CS.

Inferno is the best colour :approve:

Why does the one in that photo have a black door mirror though :S

And where's the spolier?

Thanks for the nice comment about the 106, was indeed a beauty :)

The M Roadster is simply awesome to be honest, dont believe what people say about the handling either, in all honesty in the dry its fantastic, not like a go-cart but you travel across ground at a ridiculously fast rate! In the wet you have to be careful, as it will wheelspin in 3rd with a healthy dab of the throttle - no traction control as its a real hairy chested animal of a car . . .

I absolutely love it, and may buy another one when my girlfriend moves a bit closer cos its simply awesome - 1st, 2nd, 3rd gear acceleration is immense. With 4th and 5th in serious licence losing territory. Ive personally done a GPS verified 0-60 in 4.7 with 0-100 in 11.4 and a friends was still pulling at 171mph - again GPS verified! Its quick!!

All that with dirt cheap insurance, ie a grand fully comp as a 22 yr student with a yrs no-claims and 24mpg average.

Selling it is a very painful experience for me :(

Clio will cost about £800 with Admiral, could get it for slightly less with Direct Line but they dont allow any modifications for under 25's.

Personally i think thats rather expensive when my 321bhp M Roadster only costs £980 . . .

I just grabbed the pic off google, i realise it isnt quite right, but it makes the colour look gorgeous :D

And yeah ill deffo miss the power, but fun and chuckability will make up for it . . . my old 106 gti was simply awesome fun and i view the 182 as the modern equivalent so im sure it wont disappoint!!

Hey hey Davey-boy, you seem to turn up at every car forum I join!

Got myself a 172 instead of the 106 GTi in the end, loving every minute so far!

Good choice on the 182, most fun out of the 3 by a long way... :)

  A slow one :-(
Im 22 with 2 NCBs just got insured on my 172 Cup for 900 quid with bell. Put my mum on it and brought it down 300 quid. Might be worth trying them out!

Oh and welcome to the club!

So Dave... your secret is out... ;)

Be very different from the Rallye, I likened my Cup to my 106 but with loads more torque!

Yeah, even the very last GTi-6 is now around 5 years old... and as you say, not the best on fuel!
