Had a slight rolling road incident!

  172
Well the story goes, went to get the 172 RR'd this aftenoon at a local tuner ( peter burgess in alfreton ) Top bloke Peter said he'd only charge £15 to do a power run so i was chuffed with the price... They strapped the car down, bedded the tyres in to the RR, Set up the cooling fan and off they went.

Everything seemed to be going ok, the car had been running at high revs for a few minutes when i noticed a lot of smoke coming from the exhaust manifold area... i could see the exhaust glowing red then next minute the manifold is up in flames... the soundproofing is smoldering and im flapping like a fu**er!! One of the guys calmly walked off to get a fire extinguisher / jug of water, cameback and put the flames out with the water, how the exhaust manifold didnt crack il never know!? Didnt manage to get any pictures as i was more interested in putting the flames out!

Overall damage was'nt too bad, it melted my servo vacuum pipe, and burnt the soundproofing but all in all i got away with it lightly... It made 162BHP ATW too which i thought was ok.

  Bus w**ker
f**king hell I'd of s**t myself PMSL. Any idea of the cause?

Nice to see you back on BTW. ;)

Very lucky indeed! It must just be the high revs in an enclosed space that caused the problems, nevr had any temperature problems before.

And thanks Sy, good to back. Dunno what the cause was, as said i drive the car everyday, hard most of the time too!

162 at the wheels??? so what mods you got?

scary stuff with fire though

182 manifold, sport cat, K-Tec stainless and matched inlets. That is all

His dyno is older than i my grandad tho, i must add!!

Although he was saying another local dyno makes 30 - 40 BHP more with the same car, so i cant see those figures bein too optimistic.

Dunno what 162 ATW would be at the flywheel, 182 ish maybe???

Blimey mate I've always worried about something like this happening when I've RR'd mine. glad to hear no mager damage, and a good figure to end the day. At a RR day in Ipswich my standard 182 made 171 bhp at the fly.
to calculate the wheels figure to fly figure, on the power graph should be a 'drag' line. add that figure to the at the wheels figure and you have a rough estimate at the fly.

Continuously at high revs?

Not just power runs through the gears to the limiter and back down again?

Well, he had it at about 4k revs for ages, bedding the tyres in to the rollers?? Dunno exactly why he had to do that?

But the actually power run was a slow acceleration upto the limiter, think he may have done it in 3rd and then in 4th for the final run. Im not sure if thats how it should be done TBH?? Maybe thats why it got so hot?

Happy with the power it made tho in the end.

shouldn't need to bed the tyres in as he has said mate, as the rollers are just like driving on any surface

And a power run should be done in 4th, from low revs, (circa 1200) and full throttle untill either limiter is reached, untill the car cannot pull any higher revs, or when the RR operator deems the run should be aborted
