Had my 172 two weeks and hanging bracket has torn a whole in my exhaust!

Gutted and pretty peeved I have to say! this is on the centre silencer section. Gave it some gas and next thing i know it's blown a hole in it.

Couple of question guys.

1. what's caused it? Is this likely to have happened because there must be another hanger off?

2. what chance do you think I've got of getting the garage to replace/ weld the exhaust for free given that I have only had the car two weeks.

this is the second item to fail in two weeks, windscreen washers being the first ( they have already agreed to replace the washer motors )

The original exhausts are always rubbish and fail. Had to change my whole system due to rust. Sounds similar to your situation. I would suggest new system otherwise you may fix one problem n another will occur. I'm sure once all these little niggly bits are fixed u won't have too many more problems

cheers bud,

I take it from your reply you reckon it is just wear and tear rather than the result of another fault on the car?

Yeah its wear and tear mate, standard systems are getting old now and they were never the best. Personally I'd try and stretch to a stainless system, still cheaper then genuine OE system plus it'll last years.

Could ask them to fit stainless one if you buy a used one that would save cash of fitting and they normally come up for sale on here

do you think I will be able to get the garage to cough up?

Doubt they'll cough up for a standard, tbh they'll more then likely try and repair the current system or replace with cheap pattern part.

Best bet is to try and see if you provide the exhaust and they'll fit saving you the hassle. As said they come up on here often enough.

Bit short this month having just bought the car. If I can get them to repair it for the mean time. I imagine they will just weld it. Next month may well be stainless time however now I'm 32 I can't really have loud and proud system! There seems to be a few on flee bay for around the two hundred Mark pro flow etc
