had my timing belt done today!

  Astra van,Mk1 nova
well this morning on friday 13th i left aberdeen at 6.15am to head to glasgow to get my major service done, got the fine and at 9am for the garage to start work on it straight away! anyway after 7 boring hours in glasgow i get my car back. runs like a dream! great job even had other stuff done too, so payed the garage and on my way, was driving back down the road and was looking at the reciept, had to look twice. never seen any price for a aux belt change. so stopped the car about a mile down the road and opened the bonnet:eek: the old aux belt was still on! straight on the phone i went. No answer as it was past 5 pm:dapprove: so had no choice but to drive back up to Aberdeen with the old aux belt on!

now im £650 down and the same chance of the the belt coming off and wrecking the engine!

whats the chances of it failing in the next couple of hundred miles?

How much will it cost to get the aux belt done now?

so gutted................ and to add insult to injury i had a warning light come on, on my way down to Glasgow. :dapprove:

a cup yeah? takes about 15 seconds to change if you are blind and only have one arm with half a hand and 2 fingers on it.
do it yourself

Seriously!!! Its a doddle, 16MM through the back of the alternator, slacken the nut, undo the 13MM bolt at the front, slacken the 10MM nut off that is in the upright position, it will go slack, put together in reverse order!!

what sort of tension should it be mate? im not wanting it to pop of and nacker the valves when the timing belt comes of with it:)

ooohhhh is there a guide mate, im mechanically minded but to scared to challange the cup:eek:

honestly, it's so simple you'd be embarassed to have asked for a guide if you have a proper look. you need 3 spanners for the whole job. 16mm, 13mm and 10mm. Un nip the pivot bolt (16mm) un nip the tensioner locking bolt (13mm) undo the tensioner nut (10mm) until belt is loose, remove belt and replace with new, tension belt by doing up nut (10mm) re-tighten locking bolt (13mm) re-tighten pivot bolt (16mm) finish.

Ideally, you should just be able to twist it through 90 degrees with a bit of force! Hard to describe really!! lol, although you may need to go a wee bit tighter, they tend to squeal on start up! But if it does, just take itanother couple of turns and try again! Have a feel off it at the min, it wants to be similiar!!!!!

yup, 90deg twist on longest run is correct for a multi-vee belt. and exactly as you say, it's never quite tight enough to not squeel lol

M

mini-valver

You dont need luck mate, lol. It couldn't be easier if Renault tried!

Let us know how you got on ;)

Just remember to get the tension correct or the belt will slip or iftoo tight wear out alternaor bearings etc
