Have you got better at shooting games with age....or worse?

  Not a 320d
I honestly feel that as ive aged (lol 24) ive become worse at shooting games and have appaling reaction times. Maybe Im just handicapped.

Playing BF3 for the first time online since spring and Im all full of rage because I keep getting shot. Its like they know when im coming round the corner or something.

Anyone else suffering????

Much worse.

Not that I'm a bad shot, I just don't commit my brain to it anymore and plan strategicly. I remember playing Halo2 in my teens and running circles round people, laughing down the mic at them for stepping out of a doorway onto my grenade, I was actually thinking about this the other week but it's not just you - youngsters are just generally better at games I think.

Thats got to be it. I just sit there thinking f**k this I cant be arsed and my brain goes to sleep. Then bam.

Whatever happened to CS 1.6 style shooters. Run and gun. I know BF3 isnt run and gun as such like Modern Warfare but whether I run or camp I get killed.

  DON'T SEND ME PM'S!!
WAY worse now that I used to be. Can't be bothered to play enough to get good again either, far too busy for that

She I was 17/18, I was scarily good at COD on console.

Used to play S&D at a competitive standard. Then got a Mrs and she took up all my time.

Still good now, not as fast to react. Took my sensitivity down from 9 to 5 now. I'm a lot smarter than what I used to be though.

Just been at it again. i literally have no idea how people can be better than me. I start shooting well before I get shot at and still, I die.

I'm still reasonably good tbh. Went nearly a year without playing the Xbox as we had our little 'in born last year, but when I fired it up recently I've still got it lol.

Reactions are slower for me :(

It all went downhill when I hit 30. I get nailed in cod before I have even seen people sometimes

I'm a lot more tactical than I used to be.

^^^ - This by a country mile. I'll often go way out around the edges of the map in order to get to the objective - or come in from an angle where the opposing team will simply not think you'll be at. Another tactic is to blantantly make an objective or defence unit (turret, etc) so open and tempting to take, that the enemy simply doesn't check that you'll be covering that area.

Although I think I used to be good in the days of UT2004 and similar with the instagib mod - I know that realistically, I'll be a 5.5/6 out of 10 when going toe-to-toe with most people these days. Some days I'm lucky, other days, I haven't a hope in hell - but that gap can significantly widen if there's a chain of benefits from unlocks and dodgy achievements. That's why games like CS are still held in such high regard. The big chunk of playng that game came down to skill, rather than having 10 ACOG scopes to choose from, compared to the poor n00b who's just started with his iron sights.

I think the achievement 'demand' has diluted a lot of casual FPS play online too. It's not the majority that team up these days and collectively take on the task at hand. One or two people may stick together - but usually the kids on your team will be more concerned with 4x headshots with an M1911 achievement, so that they can unlock the kharki/silver paint job for their gun. Give me back the structure of BF2142 anyday of the week. A commander in charge who can drop the assets and coordinate the sides' movements. He in turn tells the squad leaders what to do - who in turn tells their 5 other members of the squad what to do. When people listened and acknowledged to what they needed to do for the good of the team - it was FPS nirvana. Nothing, even by 2012 standards - has come close to that. You just seldom get that these days.

I have always been s**t at games in general. Never had consoles/pc during younger days, only really started playing in very early 20s.

FPS games have evolved. Not really for the better in my opinion. I started playing when Half Life was just released and the betas of CS and Day of Defeat were being pumped out a good 10-11 years ago. Back when you bought guns and just used them. No unlocks no fancy killstreak bits and bobs, just point and click, the person with the best reactions/tactics/aim won.

Now CoD MW and BF it is completely different. Too many variables for pure skill. Can be spotted, blasted by a tank, parachuted on top of, mashed by a chopper or plane, rinsed by a killstreak.

Don't get me wrong, amazingly enjoyable but it lost the edge that I used to enjoy, be it in public games and competitive matches.

Suffice to say I play Starcraft 2 mainly to get my skill based pleasures. FPS are nice and easy to pick up and spray :)

Plus all these consol w**kers have some form of aim assist.

^^^ - I despair every time I see this. I think it's an embarrassment if you use it and should give you a negative score! Fired up Air Conflicts : Pacific Carriers last night, that I forgot had the 'luxury' of being another cross-platform title. Flying in over Pearl Harbour to take on the Japs, I was shocked at how inaccurate you needed to be for your crosshair to lock-on to the target in front. It made the game silly-easy. Do people really want to play games with the Kiddy Assistances switched on? :S

Definitely Dave. FPS's have become the hybrid cars of our time. They 'evolved' and there's no way of going back now, imo. Such a shame. FPS games now are still enjoyable to play - don't get me wrong. But the formula of the genre was SO much better several years ago. Change is great, if that change is for the better. With the current crop of FPS's - I just don't see it that way.

Im only 19, but its my concentration that has gone. Sometimes I just cba and rush in, instead of trying hard.

I used to be pretty good but gave up with online because firstly, there's always someone better than you, and secondly, there's always someone cheating.

Too stressful and not very good for you, so I settle with campaign these days and enjoy it a lot more.

  Evo 5 RS
Worse.

But as someone else has mentioned FPS games are completely different these days. It's a lot less about reflexes and a lot more about using the right perks and weapons. I doubt I'd be any where near as quick as I was at CS 1.5 now as I was 9 or 10 years ago. Just doesn't happen. People get older, slower and then they die lol.

Another point with age (though not FPS related) was that study with kids playing racing games. At an age where the concept of driving and racing makes sense, kids were normally better than a capable adult - because they had no real-world driving experience to form habits on.

I guess it would be an interesting study to see if active front line servicemen would be mediocre at FPS's - as they are familiar with issues of recoil, reloading ammo, deflection fire, etc.?

Worse, but it's down to lack of time to play and reactions worsening. I'm much better at strategy games now.

TBH I have always been s**t at shooting games, I suck ass big time at call of duty-on line, but its still a good laugh.

Not losing it at all. Just think "what would I do if it were me" and you can normally outsmart them with some quick thinking. I.e. running half round a building when you have been seen and just double back and then chase them. Works for me!

I am a lot worse than when I was back at school, instead of admitting to myself that I am indeed crap I shout about nerds staying up all night playing these games whilst playing with themselves over anime.

Worse and seem to get more annoyed with age. Think when i was younger i concentrated more but games have evolved massively, and getting your ass kicked by an 11 year old never gets tiresome (it does really, like controller vs wall= wastes another £30)

I would have thought the opposite to be honest. If you have an interest in racing cars then you know about racing lines and apply that to a game. Depending on the game of course, I am much better at Forza than I am with Need for Speed because Forza uses at least some realistic physics that I already know about whereas NFS is just a game where I have to learn how to go fast by experimenting.

Likewise with shooters, an element of realism comes into it, if you know the game has physics that affect bullet drop and speed, you might be leading your shots whereas a sci-fi shooter you might just need to keep the recticule on the target at all times. Both transfer hand-eye coordination and I actually found that I was a natural at shooting real guns a few years ago (and credited my days on FPS games lol).

Agree with you there. I don't play BF3 anymore, apart from when a couple of mates are on there and it's usually just an excuse to chat s**t really. I found that I don't get stressed out by BF3 just because I accept there's cheaters and people that have nailed jet tactics so they can own you everytime and thus don't find it exciting either.

I bought SC2 on recommendation from a friend, got 'ALRIGHT' at the micro required in the first 5 minutes, but after that it falls apart. Suppose it's good for keeping your brain monitoring things I just don't find it fun in the slightest.

HoN on the other hand... Enough micro to be rewarding but still fun to play.

The thing is, it is true 1v1. You are playing to beat the other person, there is no one else there to influence the outcome of the particular game. That is what I love! O it is frustrating/rage inducing/hilarious all that the same time.

Owned the game since release so nigh on 2 years now and apart from Half Life 1/2 it has given me the most pleasure and value for money from a game.

I can do the first 5 minutes of my matchups with my eyes closed. The multitasking is obsecene sometimes, and watching the professional SC2 players makes my brain hurt. Them Koreans are damn good.

Yep, their videos are mental but I'd rather play than watch. I love SC2, such a balanced game but I wish it didn't require so much micro to be competitive (even at the bottom of the skill scale it's about micro before anything else.

Yea it is an easy game to learn. Hard to master!

Ah I love playing and watching. Always watch the Korean leagues. Beats watching most things on TV haha!

I managed to catch some CS:GO action on Twitch at the weekend. Looks good I must admit.

I remember Modern Warfare 1. Used to get genuine 40 kill rounds with like 4 deaths. M16 on burst silencer and the right perks and I was well away.

Used to properly set my mouse up on high DPI settings too so I could move accurately even at long range. I used to get kids full on yelling at me calling me a hacker LOL.

I've not touched a shooter except RE6 in the last 6 months, been playing a lot of Street Fighter 4, competing in tournaments..

Got Halo 4 on launch, and I've still got it, so in short, no.

Haven't touched Halo since last year, and CoD bores me now, and I used to be a fanatic, GoW3 had more longevity in it for me.
But as a comparison to when I played the likes of CoD4? I'm much better now than back then. I use my head, if I look like I'm running into a losing fight, I get out, whilst before I went Rambo, which doesn't usually work.

PC gaming though, not touched that in like 7-8 years when I used to play CS:source in tournys. I'm probably pap at that now.

Practice makes perfect, although I seem no better with it I have got no worse.
Don't forget the kids will put in much more hours due to lack of job/wife/children etc. Looking up tactics and watching 'how to's' on youtube definitely helps with FPS games.
I do seem to play best while drinking copious amounts of caffeinated soft drinks though.
