Any head gasket change is a tw*t m8 as the cambelt has to be changed as well so u need new tensioners and idler pulleys, + u might as well service it at the same time and it might need a skim, stan* is online at the mo best askin him m8 hell be able to tell you far better than i

my pal has the gasket set and a new cambelt - we also have the haynes manual but entertainingly enough it has kinda a disclaimer saying that they didnt have the car when wrighting the book so its a kinda we think you should do this tutorial, which is often utter poo

thanks for any help tho

ideally you want to change belt+pulleys etc, but it isnt necessary....but i would. its probably best to check the head for any warping. use an engineers rule and lye on edge from one corner of the head diagonally accross to the other. use a feeler gauge to check clearance. if in doubt, take it to your local engine reconditioners, and if you ask nicely they will check it for free.

As for changing the gasket, it isnt too difficult if you are mildly confident. its far easier in a 19 than a clio, so you have the better deal really! keep the haynes on hand tho, as it will offer help if you get stuck.

stan, thanks for the help, is there any major pitfalls to look out for? or is it really do able? how much time u rekon we should allow to attempt this bearing in mind that whilst i have done alot of suspension stuff and this and that i have never really took the big bits of the engine appart.

cheers

just take your time and be methodical...and tidy. if you have bits all over the place it wont help matter!! if you think you will be unsure of where stuff goes when re-fitting...lable it.

as for time...a day? depends really.

no pifalls as such....have a flick thru the haynes, if there is anything you arent sure about, get back on here and ask!
