Heater goes from Lukewarm to Cold after car not being used for a month??

  182 BG
Heyy

Pretty much as the title says, my car hasnt been used for about a month, due to me being at Uni.. It has been started once during the middle, but only run for a few mins...

Took it for a decent drive today, about an hour and a half, and found that the heater took a LOT longer than usual to heat up, and when it did, it alternated between lukewarm and almost totally cold... though it never got totally cold, but still cold enough for me to be freezing!!

The engine temp went up at about normal rate and sat just below half, which is normal unless im stationary for a while..

Couldn't see any link between the air changing temp and moving/revs/idling etc etc...

Only thing to mention is that the head gasket is failing slightly on 1 cylinder, the mechanic I used found that when cold it lost a little bit of water and was a bit lower on a compression test, but once the engine warmed up it lost none, and passed a compression test fine, as the expansion of the engine from the heat was more than enough to stop the leak.. So it looses a little bit of water when totally cold, but give it a min or 2 and its fine... I keep it topped up and never had any problems, been running like this for about 9 months!

Just wondering if because its been sitting the matrix has got a bit blocked of a valve jammed?

Cheers

I wasn't sure if it was the 1.4 8v or the 1.8 8v...

... the Mk1's are a bit of a bugger for heater matrix blockages. Next time its running see if one or both of the matrix pipes get hot as this will rule out a blockage. Could also be the start of an HGF but its not a bad fix on these lumps and an easy DIY if you're capable.

I seem to remember the mechanic I usually use saying something similar about they block up quite easily... I had the matrix steam cleaned last winter, as the heater wasn't working all the time, turned out to be a sticky thermostat or valve, I can't remember now...

I'll check the matrix pipes next time I have it running... If it is blocked, what is the solutions for it?

Also, can you explain how if it was the beginning of HGF it would affect it? As the engine runs at normal temperature quite happily with no issues... Apart from the slow loss of water when cold obviously..

I have looked at doing the head gasket already... Its just the timing bit I don't like! But if I need to do it urgently, I will..

Sounds like blocked heater matrix to me. Iv only ever found that replacing them cures them 100%.
