Hello everyone. I am looking for some advice.

  2006 Modus
Could anyone tell me the best thing to do.
My son has a renaultsport 172 (GV52 XSM) and the cam belt has snapped rendering the whole thing out of action.

Would he be better trying to sell the car as a whole or is it preferable to strip it and sell the parts.

The garage where it is resting (in Basildon, Essex) tell him that it will be around £500 for parts plus labour. Would he be better trying to sell it for around £500 or just scrap it. Obviously whoever is interested will have to collect. It does have take til the end of June and MOT until next January. The mileage is around 60,000.

It probably would be a good investment for someone who could repair it, but its not within his capabilities.

Any advice would be very welcome, either email, message or reply here.

Thank you everyone. The forum looks so friendly with lots of good advice from you chaps.

Many thanks,

Susan

I suppose it depends on how much free time whoever is breaking it has as it takes a while to break a car. You will get more money breaking it but is it worth the effort?

My personal opinion is either pay a specialist to fix it properly or cut your losses and bang it on eBay spares or repair

Susan the garage quote sounds a little 'cheap' if im honest-

in as much as you will be getting a second hand engine fitted, however its unlikely the garage will go to throuble of changing the cambelt & auxillary belt kits on it so you could pay all that money for the same thing to happen-

A 52 plate 60k 172 is worth about 2-2200-
Broken into bits probably you would get 1300-1750 I guess- but your probably not going to break it-

So your choice is to fix at cost- but get it fixed at an approved specialist on here not at a alocal garage-

there are a few people that break these on here-

its worth while joining full membership & Speaking to someone like Budgie who will probably be able to fit an engine & do the belts-

IN summary budget around £750 to get her up & running again inc trailoring OR Ebay it as a non runner you will get around 700 quid-

Either way you will be NET out of pocket the same-

I would sell it & buy a different car

Hi, we can offer a price on the engine, or we can also supply an engine (we have one on a pallet ready to ship) so if required can be there before the bank holiday.
Hope you find a solution for him

You sound like a very switched on mum!!

If my cambet snaped my mum would ask me what do I want for tea, not join a car forum to ask for advice.

Good on you!

personally id be looking at repairing the current engine, plus obviously fitting a new cambelt and aux belt kit on it. which is what the original garage has i assume quoted for, but to have it done properly your looking at not far off twice their quote.

id be looking to get it towed to a specialist depending on your location

Sorry I mean a price on the car not the engine... it's been a long day! Also lol at daniel

*edit with regards to repairing the original engine it, Id say it depends on how fast he was going, bit of a pain if say all 16 valves are bent!

Susan, I had a similar problem a few weeks ago and earlier this week and know how the heart sinks when this happens.

I was lucky and able to find an engine belonging to a forum member which had a history documented on this site for £350. The cambelt had been done less than 2 years /20,000 miles ago by one of the traders on the site- Mick at Diamond Motors. So it was an easy decision for me to go down the replacement engine route. I am sure there will be other engines around at this sort of price but I believe the important thing is to satisfy yourself that the engine has had a recent cambelt change by a reputable garage.

If you do buy one from Renparts or similar it is likely to cost in the region of £500 with 3 month warranty and you then either take a chance on the cambelt or spend another £300 getting it done.

It may be worthwile posting a wanted ad for an engine as there is bound to be someone who has just smashed his/her pride and joy and has a nice engine with history in a damaged shell.

Judging from the sympathetic responses to your post so far you will maybe find another forum member in your area willing to do an engine swap for a lot less than your local garage.

Hi Ken
Thank you so much for your reply. It was helpful. You were very lucky to get that engine for that price. Well done.
Thanks again,

Susan

Hello everyone.

Could you give some further advice please. What would you suggest a reasonable asking price to sell for spares / repair / project as it stands. It looks very dirty as its stood round under blossom trees then in the garage where it is now since end of May. Some scrap place said they would pay £300 and take it away. What do you think. Would be grateful for your words of wisdom.

Thanking you,

Susan
