Hello - prospective owner

  clio 172
Hi,
new prospective owner from Leicester.
I am almost ready to buy a 51 clio 172 as a daily runabout instead of my Discovery...
it's done 116,00 miles. Had the brakes done front and rear. Looks like there is a small fluid leak on the drivers side front wheel.
Radio is crap - i presume they are all like this?
Might need a new tyre - slow puncture - what are the recommended?
Is there anything specific I should be looking out for?
cheers
Rich

Cambelt 100%. Make sure it's done by a specialist as well. Find out if/when it was done and who by and then update this thread and one of us will let you know.

I am in Leicester, is there anyone local who is recommended? The garage I normally use is a land rover and v8 specialist (Armson AE).

when should the belts have been done? i
t's 15/16 years old and done 115600 miles - so I guess they should have been done a couple of times?

How mch is the car ?
If you're paying top dollar then get one that's had both belts done . If it's cheap as chips then get the belts done yourself at Diamond motors.
I wouldn't say they are a ticking time bomb if it's gone past the scheduled service interval , but that depends on how far past mileage/age wise. There must be 100's of people out there who aren't a member of a car forum and are totally oblivious to the service interval.

Is there an advert for it you can post a link to ?

Why do you say the radio is crap ? You mean crap reception or crap sound ? Maybe the speakers are knackered .

Tyres are quite a personal thing . I've been running Uniroyal Rainsport 3's for the past few years and love them , especially in the wet . For a 172 they can be had for as little as £49 at Camskill . I would always keep the same brand of tyre on the same axle.

If you have any doubts about this car , look elsewhere . There are always plenty for sale in the usual places.

Mines just hit 5 years and done 25k miles on this belt so was just wondering should I start panicing
I left my 182's major belt service until it was 6 years old on 33k miles . I wouldn't start panicking just yet. But I would be planning / saving ( if money is an issue) on getting the belts done in the near future .

  dan's cast offs.

Isn't it 6 years now Renault/gates say?

You're cup though so it's fair bit cheaper having them done on a cup, only takes about 20 minutes :tongueclosed:

A mate who runs a garage had it off someone who didn't want to pay for a few bits to be done. It's had brakes all round as far as I know. He wants about a grand for it. The interior looks pretty good tbh. The radio has crap reception.
tyre wise, just looking at options as it looks like one has a slow puncture.

Offer your mate £750 to take it off his hands then get the belts done yourself at Diamond motors . Get Mick to give it the once over to highlight any other issues it might have and you might have yourself a bargain .

About 10 quid to fix a puncture if it's repairable, that's if it's not the wheel itself causing the slow puncture . If the tyres knackered look at Camskill and just replace it . Best to replace in pairs though really .
I couldn't say about the radio reception . Maybe have a search on here or google.

belts have been done - yay.
it looks like it's not a genuine aerial - so a new replacement should fix it. Where is the best place to go for parts?

So you've bought it and had the belts done ?
Parts as in a new aerial or parts in general ?
Some parts like engine mounts off ebay , thats if it needs them.
For brakes George on here is the usual go to guy on here . @George@RTR_Parts
Other parts in the for sale section or Renaultpartsdirect .
It's a bit of a case of shopping about , depending what you need.

said i'll buy it subject to the bits I know about being fixed. All the belts and dephaser and seals wee done mid 2015, there is a bunch of receipts. The brakes were done 3/4 months ago.
in this case possibly a new aerial (but also in general). I know from when I had landrovers that there were certain places to go to and some to avoid..

Nice one . Sounds like a result . I'm not really clued up about aerials or audio. Has it got some stubby type of aerial ? Some people change them for the short Honda civic type of aerial . It might actually be the base of the aerial

This is what a genuine aerial should look like .

ahh it's a little stubby thing, so that will go on the parts list..
I will get the garage to give it look over underneath..

I picked up an owner's handbook from eBay for less than a tenner if my memory serves me correctly
