Help and advice with Clio Sport 182

Hi Guys, I am after a new car and hopefully going to be buying a Clio Sport 182 today,

But just wanted some advice really as to am i paying the right price etc.

It is a 182 on a 05 plate and done 53,000 and has 12 months MOT, it is in really good condition inside and out.

the asking price is £3295 from a small dealer company.

Is this price about right??

Thanks :)

Emma

Hi Emma,

Seems an ok price.

Do they have a receipt for the belts being done.

If not then they will need doing at £500.

You'll always pay abit more from a garage.

I reckon private sale for a Titanium would be nearer £2500.

Good luck with it.

Ok thanks, So i just need to check if the cam belt has been done and if it hasnt try and knock off £500? or would i still be looking at paying the same price?
Thanks

Oh also another question, Anything else I should be looking for? Im not a car expert so just a few main tips for stuff i should look out for?

Thanks :)

Knowing what garages are like they won't take £500 off if it hasn't been done.

They will probably say they will do the cambelt themselves but it needs to be done by specialists like one of the traders on here.

Otherwise it is just usual things like tyres, brakes, service history, knocking on full lock, paintwork.

Is there someone who you can go with who knows a little about cars?

Is it in Erdington Emma? Driven past one there recently.
Price sounds about right for the car from a dealer. You'll see a lot written about the dephaser, basically when the engine is warm, if the dephaser is going then it will sound a bit like a diesel, if it needs replacing then it's done with the cambelt, so it's about £600 all in. Doubtful on the mileage but worth listening out for. Other than that just listen for knocks, rattles and whines on the test drive.

Thanks for your replies, No its not in Erdington. Its in Nottingham, Why does the cam belt need to be done by a specialist?

What is a dephaser?

Dephaser is the variable valve timing pulley basically , if the engine sounds a little rattly knocky top end then that will need replacing more than likely !

The belts are best done my a specialist because people get the wrong , very easy to mis time the engine and lose a lot of power ! People on hear know how to time the engine correctly ! Hope this helps

also look for rear brakes, the discs are quite expensive to replace !

The exhaust back boxs are also mega money if ya a standard exhaust you can almost guarantee it'll be rotten and need replacing at £380 odd + vat!

It needs to be done by a specialist because of having the correct tools and making sure the timing is correct.

What colour is it?

Its silver, Ok so how can i check the rear breaks to see if they need doing?? And how can i check the exhaust? Just look underneath and see if its rotten?

Also if there i do need the cam belt doing what trader on here will do it? and are there any near Nottingham?

Thanks :)

How do i get hold of mick? and if the dephaser isnt making a noise when i get the cambelt done would i still need to get this done at the same time or would it just be the cam belt??
Thanks :)

See if the exhaust pipes sticking out look shiny or would look shiny if polished (that would suggest the exhaust is stainless and has been replaced) or like a random alloy and small (standard or pattern part). The standard ones fail and are mega money from Renault.

I went to look at it last night, when the garage was shut so i wasn't able to look inside but i had a good look around the outside of it and the exhaust pipes that were sticking out where shiny so i think i should be ok with the exhaust then :) and how would i go about checking the rear brake discs someone else mentioned?

No offense, but I would seriously be looking to take someone with you who knows what go look for, or failing that pay for an AA inspection.

Exhaust tips can be shiny, but the rest can be (and probably will atleast a little bit if its the original) rotten.

These cars are great if you can get a good one, but if you dont it will cost you a fortune.

Looks a nice car, as per above if the belts havent been done recently with proof then take it to Mick @ Diamond motors in notts and he will sort it for you.

What happens when a "normal" garage works on these generally is the cam timing ends up slightly out, not a major problem just a loss of a bit of power, so it depends how bothered you are about getting every last BHP out of it as to if its worth having it checked by someone like Mick if you do find there is a receipt for it being done recently from a normal garage.

To be fair, in certain light all Silver 182's look like they've had a front end respray.

Mick is near nottingham good price for the mileage. I got to lol at people say 2500 private

Apologies for thread jacking.
Why lol? I paid £2400 for my 182 with 50k on the clock at the end of Feb. Came with the cup spoiler pack but no shocks or anthracite wheels. :( Seller originally wanted £3k but I read through the history and there was nothing in there about belt changes so I paid £2.4k for it.

Granted since then it's had some work though which bumps up the cost - it's had a new cambelt, aux belt, dephaser pully and engine mount from BTM, 4 new sets of discs and pads and 4 new tyres so within a month of having it I've easily thrown at least another grand at it (who's counting? :p) but daaaamn it was worth it and it's a fun little car to drive. :D
They're fantastic for surprising people who don't know what a 182 is.

No cup packs, no centre caps, no deal.

For some people that wouldn't bother them... I bought a non-cupped 182 this time round as I knew I wanted Speedlines, carbon fibre splitter and coilovers :) (hopefully Trophy spoiler if I can get hold of one!)

for a good one with everything done and needing nothing so your 2.4k is really 3.4k or if its just the belt and dephaser done whats the magic number is said oh yeah 3k
