Help me decide D1000 or D40!!!

  320d
Right basically i'm trying to decide between the two.

Its my 1st DSLR camera and I'm a photography newbie.

I can get the nikon d40 18-55mm for £215

Or

The Eos d1000 18-55 for £263 inc £30 cashback.

Which would you recomend bearing in mind i'm a newbie.

Thanks

Brett

B

Brown.

From what i have seen d40, on that level Nikon seems to kick ass

Imo, the Nikon entry cameras are far superior to Canons.

But bear in mind, whatever make you get, you'll (probably) stick with. So when you have a few grands worth of lenses, its not too easy to switch!

and bare in mind how the entry level nikons can limit your choices in lenses;)

I would go the D40, or if you can get a good deal the D60 + £30 cash back.

Yes if you choose Nikon and you want Auto Focus your choice of lenses is small ;)

Your forgetting that a few of the lenses you listed are specifically designed for full frame cameras, yeah they will work on the entry level cameras, but not at the focal lengths stated!

D60 plus £30 cash back works out same as 450D and IMO its a better camera to use, with better IQ (in my experience only - not all will agree!!!)

Well this is as true on canon as nikon, it depends what crop your sensor is.

It depends what this guy is actually after, we could argue about canon vs nikon all day, personally i preffer canon, however i believe high end nikon bodys are now better than canon bodys, but i much preffer the overall package offered by canon, with lenses, useability etc... but its what your used to. If Nikon didnt have this af-s feature on the d40 i would have probably bought one a year ago and my opinion of canon vs nikon would be different.

I dont think he will be disapointed with either, but it very much depends if he may want to take this hobby further and upgrade his camera or if he just wants a decent slr.

^^ aye very true! We have both listed lenses that cost over 1k... which to be honest... should never really see the light or day on a entry level!!!!

Hmm may well go for the D40 then. Why isnt the 1000d rated btw? Amazon for the D40 and Argos for the 1000d Btw.

  VaVa
Dp review pitch the 1000D against the D60. Like any of the entry level cameras of these two manufacturers, they find it hard to split them.

Go to a shop and have a play. You'll find it easier to pick on once you handle them.

The 1000d is just a bad 400d, canon needed an even more basic model than the 400d to compete with the silly prices the d40 is at.

Imho get the 400d. Or as said look for a 30d or maybe even used 40d.
