HELP! - Mk2 1.2 16v suddenly really sluggish + exhaust emissions light

Hi, hope someone can maybe clear this up for me or at least give me a nod in the possible direction for diagnosing.

I've had my 2004 1.2 16v 'dynamique' for just over two weeks now. i commute to work about 25 miles each way throughout the week, long country back roads the whole way. yesterday it was raining quite heavily on my drive home, the exhaust emissions light suddenly started flashing and the car instantly felt sluggish and underpowered.

I have had a problem with big puddles and water getting in the engine bay before with my previous ibiza, and it feels exactly the same - juddering and underpowered. however the difference lies in the fact that usually if i left the car to sit for a few hours or over night any water would clear out and the car would be back to normal, but with the clio i've left it 24 hours now and it still feels the same to drive with an intermittent flashing emissions light - very frustrating!

i have tried driving it in lower gears in the hope that it will clear but no luck.

what do i do clio sport gurus?

Have you tried a code reader yet? that will usually tell you what sensor is at fault, If it is an emissions light I would guess it is the Lambda sensor.

Thanks for the responses, we have a renault specialist garage here in York that i'll have to book it in with.

such a pain as i have only just bought the car and had several problems with it already, doesnt look like the dealer wants to pay out for anything either, gutted.

anyone else had this problem? especially if it was connected to rain water i am interested if there is a link here... also what significance could the emmisions light in combo with the loss of power possibly mean?

Could be a number of things first port of call as said get a code reader to tell you what fault code it's throwing up it could be a sensor pre car or post cat maybe the cat is a little dirty now (possible rust hole in cat and waters got in) cat cleaner might work but I would wait for Renault to tell you
