Help... pc not booting up....

  Goliath I
Ive just tried to boot my pc, it went through a series of tests and just crashed. After rebooting it just kept crashing so I ran the diagnostic check and everything passed except for the following...

SMART Short Self Test..... failed

I've read up and the majority tells me that the hard drive is shot and needs replacing? :(

Does anyone know if its repairable or do I indeed need a new hard drive? and if so are any of the files (pics/vids/word docs etc....) salvagable?

Cheers for any help anyone can offer

Hard drive is dead / nearly dead.
It's possible it could be fixed by replacing the disk controller with one from an identical drive (that's the circuit board bit on the HDD). But if it's mechanically damaged / broken you'll need a new hard disk.
It happens unfortunately, that's why you should take regular backups of anything important onto a separate hard disk or removable media.
Use this opportunity to upgrade to a larger and / or faster HDD.

There are data recovery services that could help you with getting you files. But I doubt it would be too cheap.

Put in your xp disc. Boot it up and choose Repair. The type "Chkdsk -r" without the quotations. If that doesn't work, you need a new hard drive.

Cheers, Il have a go.

If it needs a new hard drive is it simply a case of buying - connecting - rebooting? Or does it get really technical?

I doubt a chkdsk will fix a SMART error.
A SMART error is hardware level reporting of an imminent failure and has nothing whatsoever to do with data integrity AFAIK.

You'll need your OS and all your applications reinstalling and all your p**n will need to be downloaded again.
