Help please, rear silencer box rotted off!!

Whilst my wife was driving her 172 cup home last night the rear box became somewhat detached! In my wisdom I decided to cut through the rubber supports to allow us to drive to the nearest "tyre and exhaust"center without causing more damage to the underneath of the car.I must admit the car does sound quite nice and sporty but not the kind of attention the missus wants to attract when pulling up to pick the kids up from school!
The exhaust people told me that "its a dealer supply/fit only and at a cost of £236 from the friendly local Renault dealership, OUCH!!!!!
Any sugestions would be appreciated the car is a 2003 172 cup.

cheers big al

They are expensive. If you want the quietest possible backbox, then Renault it is.
They're only guaranteed for 12 months though.

Cheaper equivalents, not as quiet, are somewhere like Kwik-fit for about £170.

Other route is stainless and have it from the cat back. Mine was £230 full fitted for a Powerflow one. Replica of the original exhaust with free-flow silencers for a bit of power increase too.

Just had car re-mapped too, which has quietened the exhaust down a bit, plus its got 2k miles under its belt now, so is run in nicely. They are a bit noisy when first fitted.

MIJ - £350
Prospeed - £350
K-TEC - £375

all above prices are approx, do a search, it's all down to personal choice on sound/look.:D

I had the same late last year, went down the Prospeed route. £319 (should be £380 but CS Discount!) and they build it right in front of you.

You can choose the sound as well...but it sounds much better than standard. Plus, the standard exhaust uses the standard mounts, and its too heavy for this application, hence why it fails...better going custom, at least you know what you're getting! :)

I have a 53 172 FF.

Last Wednesday my backbox started blowing. The pipe where it connects to the centre pipe had a hole. This pipe and another mount are the only two means of support for the box.

It had also swung down slighty so I had to string up the backbox and hope it lasted until the Saturday.

I was thinking of a stainless steel exhaust but I'm skint at the moment and always like the quietest sound from my car (I don't like to sound like I'm having to thrash my car to overtake people).

I phoned Renault (Gateshead) and got quoted £171 for the backbox with VAT and fitting all inc. However, I asked if they could do it any cheaper as 'I could get a stainless steel one for not much more.' They said they'd do it for £160.

Booked it in for the Saturday.

However, Friday night it fell off all together and had to do what you did - cut through the x-shaped rubber mount and take the backbox off completely. Had to do this with tiny first aid kit scissors!

Car sounded tremendous, if a little spluttery.

I was worried they wouldn't have a new mount in stock as the mount is fixed to a big metal bracket. Fortunately they did.

All sorted by the Saturday morning. Didn't charge me for the bracket.

£160.

Should last another 3 years or so.

Reasons I went for the Renault box over stainless one is that I don't like extra sound, I would have had to have the bumper cut as I don't like them hanging below and insurance purposes. Plus I like the way the standard exhaust is tucked out of sight.

Don't get some dodgy OEM exhaust from Kwik Fit. An ill fitting/ill flowing exhaust will not allow the car to exhale properly and hinder performance.

I would have thought the Cup exhaust would be the same as a FF 172.

Rear Section of exhaust (no code given) £17.25
Silencer Rear C3 6000073740 £103.81
Clamp Exhaust 7703083397 £19.20
Exhaust Bracket C2 7700424339 £17.87

After discount came to £160.

£160's not bad. Unless the baffles go in your centre section and rattle like buggery! Or you get a hole in it, then add another £160 for silenced Renault centre section.:dapprove:

Shame the parts are soooo expensive, the standard ones are nice and quiet. Keeps the car very understated.

Yes, I like understated. Like I said, I like to overtake other cars like I'm not bothered (whether I'm thrashing the car or not). A louder exhaust makes it look like your giving it everything it's got even when you accelerate farily gently.

I had my centre section replaced under warranty due to the 3k rattle. That was back in June last year.

I think it was going to cost circa £130.

The 4K rattle will stop with a different exhaust! Will reappear (or potentially reappear) with another Renault OEM catback system.

Yeah I meant 4k rattle. I know it will stop with a better exhaust it's just that I was skint and couldn't afford one so mentioned it to the dealer to which they agreed to replace.

It probably will return in time. I may not even have the car then though.
