That's with the head gasket off? Just doesn't look right to me, the triangle wholes by the pistons worry me?

You need to clean the faces to a shiney/bare metal finish.

Triangles are the coolant jacket.

What's the best thing to use to clean it? Don't want to damage anything

Gasket scraper. They use a Stanley blade to scrape it all off. It's a time consuming job mind! Don't use sand paper or anything abrasive on the block as the dust/scrapings will drop down between the bore and the pistons and score the bore.

Scrape the s**t off. Then clean up surfaces if needed with petrol/white spirit/wd40 and a rag.

It does, but stray bits of wire brush can drop into the bore/water jacket etc. I wouldn't.

Going to take a lot of cleaning! How come my triangle coolant jackets are a lot bigger and up against bores compared to that head?
