Hi all.... noisy engine help/advice

  cilo 172
Hi im new to this so bare with me
but any way recently bought a 51 plate cilo 172 but its just started to sound like a bag of s**t
from reading other peoples posts about this problem etc its got to be the dephaser :( but thought id get it checked out so took it down to a local garage and yep its the dephaser.
they quoted £730 for the fix with cam belt
does this sound a fare price? also is it safe to drive at the mo as need to save the money first before putting it in to get fixed

thanks Andy

Safe to drive

and expensive. Plus don't use a local garage as they will most likely **** it up.

What area are you from? There may be a specialist close by.

Welcome to the forum

That's far to much if you pay your membership on here there's loads of specialists in the traders section, you will save a bit and get a good job done first time

if its not inc aux belts/tensioners as well might be a little steep but its not a million miles out pricewise. The traders on here may well beat that price by a fair chunk as they do hundereds and thus save on labour time thru experience. I dont know about what happens when a depahser fails but chances are if thats on its way out then its been a while since the belts been done. Cam belt should be every 5 years or 72k.. 5years being what most of use hit first. yours should have been done twice already and heading towards needing a third replacment on a 51 plate! It one of the reasons these little gems can be picked up so cheap.. keeping them running right aint cheap in comparison to purchase price.

failed cam belt= terminated engine.
also
failed aux belt, can ends up in the cam belt = terminated engine. So you need to budget for aux belt and tensioners as well TBH.
I personally wouldnt drive it any further than the garage.

Not really the case tbh. It's only on here because of the knowledge of the cars and the meticulousness/panic (delete as appropriate) that a dephaser would be changed either as part of a belt service or that early. Hence the belts could have been done recently and the dephasers failed or many owners wouldn't associate it with a belt change anyway.

I find the moment you mention de-phaser pulley to someone who is not in the know on the forums they go and get the belts done at a local garage without the pulley being done because its cheaper.
Then wonder why the engines noisey, this happens loads on Renault Scenics and they end up coming to anyway to sort out engine noise. So wish I could say TOLD YOU SO!

TOLD YOU SO! ????? sorry for asking for advice but only recently bought the car and I haven't changed the belts yet but guessing I should get them done at the same time I get the pulley done
cheers

I think Mike meant in a general sense and wasnt aimed at yourself ;)

Anyway Mike@Rentech is probably your closest specalist and well worth it

Dephasers don't fail...

As in self destruct, they just get noisy and as Mike has said above just because the dephaser is noisy it does not mean the belts have not been done.

But to get it all done right and piece of mind just get the belts and dephaser done and tbh the specialists are near on the same cost wise from what i have seen on here.

Yep.. Ignor me just talking rubbish as usual.. Speak to a specialist. Hope you get it sorted.
