HI NEWBIE COME FROM A DC5 TO A 172

  clio 172
rising cost of everything forced me after a 6yr happy marriage to sell me loved integra dc5 a 250bhp monster, still wanted something nippy but reliable and saw this little ph1 172 and like the look of it.... i think its been lowered not sure whats on it, its got some sort of exhaust on it, sounds good, and an airfilter thats makes an okay noise but gotta say it handles AMAZING maybe even better than my itr-dc5 which looked like this...

but sadly its gone
so i found this little beauty

i found the website through the sticker in the window, wondered if anyone new the car and the mods that are on it?
after about 15 mins of driving the engine management light came on, and its not pickin its feet up at all, took about 10 secs to 60 which isnt right, different reports say anything fro 6.7 to 7.3 so im thinkin 10 secs is slow right?
my other toys include an f3cbr600 which is undergoing a full rebuild at the mo
a series one cab 2.1 zvh

and another frenchy a 309 gti

any help would be appriacated, whats the modding route for these things, reports say a remap filter and a exhaust only adds 10 bhp hardly seams worth it?
cheers all

Surely that Clio couldn't have been on here! I'd have remembered that!

Chris will have kittens.

i never got board of the honda it was amazing, sounded and looked the part too, the wheels are abit naff but they'll do for the time being, more concerned with the issue with acceleration it has at the mo, need to sort that out then look at the other things

Why do people put cheap nasty gash wheels on cars is beoynd me. Dc5 looks amazing, one day I will have one, absolutely lush. Clio will look good on f1s

You went to Renault for reliability?
As said above, lose wheels and the nasty spoiler and you've got a lovely car.

Love DC5's though, what gave you 250hp?

i dont get the wheels, but like i said they'll do for the time being, the dc5 just cost to much, put a 10er in it, and it did 37.2 miles and that was with out v-tec and petol is never gonna get cheaper, its only gonna go up add that to the rising cost of gas electric food etc its became silly, standard they;re good on petrol but when you start modding it all goes out of the window, plus a standard on isnt that much quicker than a nicly fettled 172 there 217bhp standard, played with a few before i went modding crazy on it and there wasnt much in it, it was only once it got up to 250 then it used to pull away from most thinks, the power curve was class

  clio 172
dc5 had kpro, as thats the only was to map em, a dc sports manifold, hks decat, rbc manifold, torque damper, earthing stablizing kit, and uprated engine mounts and that to a lightened balanced flywheel and lsd it flew, the clio is lovely just need to get this issue sorted out, it has this forum sticker in the window, thought thats why i may have been known

I'm looking at getting a DC5 mate, is there anything major let down on it?

the price of modding them is a joke i spent about 4000 just to get 33bhp and have it put on spoon progressive springs, and a v.good 2001 plate will cost you 9-10k if you get cheap on theres a reason why its cheap, and running costs the later ones are the dear tax bracket, but besides that i never had a problem, after 6 years it still had the original tires on the back, and only just had new brakes and disks, bullet proof pal completly

172 will handle terrible on they 172s, if you think its amazing wait till you try it on 15s!!

engine management light could be anything really better to get it on a diagnostics machine, is it still pulling smoothly, just slow? no missfires?

when was the belts done and where?

Put the wheels on eBay and buy some 15's mate. I had to borrow some for a week and I honestly cannot express how bad they made the car.

As for the engine problem, as said, could be looooads of things. Does it still rev? Limit should be 7,200.

the wheels won't be helping you get off the line !

short of spending a fortune on forced induction, these wont get much quicker. exhaust, remap, uprated filter, matched inlets .. you're looking at >£600 for basically not much.

on a budget again, i'd go matched inlets, decatted s/s exhaust, and leave it at that, then strip it.

enjoy ;)

cheers all, it still revs high, just seams to have no balls, you cant light the wheels up in second going round a corner, it feels really flat just doesnt pick its feet up like it should, theres no oomph, had a pal plug it into a modis and it came back with no faults, but he did say the lamba and 02 readings were all over the place,he turned off the engine management light but it came back on again i need to find the prob fast as it still has 3 month warrenty on it, and depending what it is it maybe covered, oh yeah it was a genuine mugen bonnet on the teg, although when it was delievered the p.o somehow managed to break carbon fibre, but they paid to have it fixed! clumsy retards, it is a step down but like say rising costs of everything id rather have the money in the bank and still have my nice cars than have no money its not like petrol is a £ a litre anymore? the clio is amazing on fuel i think the problem someone may have swopped the engine with a diesel!!! :p

the wheels will be gettin sorted when i get this prob fixed, its already got a filter and an exhaust where is the cat? is it on the downpipes? not been underneath it, gonna do that next week when we check the lamba and o2 sensors what down pipes are recomended? the dc5 ones had dc sports, they were amazing 4 to 1 help give it loadsa torque

Might be worth getting your timing checked and a new Lambda, the latter of which usually makes the mpg bad when faulty tho.

Wouldn't hurt to have it rolling roaded also to see if its been badly tuned

+1, when i bought my 182 it was very flat through the entire rev range apart from a slight kick at 5k rpm. After getting the timing checked, it was out. So got it corrected and after that it pulls sooo much better, much more noticeable kick at 5k rpm as well :)

The rising cost of everything made you sell your nice looking (and honda reliability) dc5...

So instead you now have 3 old unreliable cars and a bike??

I expect you've got a really good reason for doing it, but i dont get it. Clio looks alright anhyoo :)

Try to find some standard 172 wheels. It will drive much better.

Your honda was nice but im suprised the handling was very similar to the 172.Good to know...

for the mileage i do around 8000 a year all the cars are reliable as they only do around 2-3000 each i now have a big fat wedge in the bank when before didnt, jobs are being axed the future isnt lookin any better, petrol aint gettin any cheaper, and the temptation to mod the dc5 more was emmense! was eyeing up bigger throttle bodies, at about 500 quid for another 12 bhp! least with the clio it should be a quick little car thats cheap to run, and if it breaks i can drive the pug, if that breaks i can get the escort out, if that breaks ill be on the bike, if that breaks then i must be really fookin unlucky! both the pug and the escorts are now turning into investments, the prices are only rising, the dc5 was losing money, yes its prob the best car im ever gonna own, but in this climate it just made more sense, if the clutch goes its a grand, if the gearbox goes its 2 grand, the the pug gearbox goes its 60 quid and i fit it myself! haha

prob still occuring, going into renault on monday, the o2 senser is showing fault, and they also think egr valve or something might be blocked or restrictive? hopefully it should be covered under warrenty dont fancy paying dealer prices ha, oh and defo gettin shut of the wheels as there 17" they're not going to help the matter, although i havent found a girl yet that doesn't like it wierdly enough, even the posh one at work! but still gettin rid and going original.

  clio 172
renault have fixed the issue with the management light, but i still think its slow, see what its like when the new wheels go on, but it has made no difference at all, it struggles to get about 80 mph!
