Just read this on the Sheffield Uni site

Electromechanical valve actuation is a key technology for improving the efficiency and reducing the fuel consumption of ICE vehicles, and thereby achieving a reduction in CO2 emissions. At the same time, engine noise can be significantly reduced. Novel actuator topologies, low cost sensors and robust control strategies for achieving the demanding dynamic performance requirements, and optimising power consumption, are being researched. Ultimately, the research findings will be validated on a Renault F4R engine. I thought this was only talked about and not actually viable at the moment cause of the weight ! Wow if it is !

I just thought it was nice they they will use a F4R engine...can u imagine a 172 with unlimited valve timing.

lotus engineering have a set up that is currently touring the motor shows, and have signed a contract with eaton automotive to market the system. The system is electro hydraulicly actuated. As mentioned this will allow infinite adjustement to valve lift and duration. Which will help clean up emisions, help efficiency and most importantly to petrol heads, aid greater power.

when i met a few i actually mean one, if any ones interested there is a pic of the engine around here i could post it if anyone is intersted, but not now thw rugby is about to start

these types of valve timing are in the development stage at renault now-not be that long before we see them.manufactures are always looking at new ways to fine tune there engines(mainly due to emission laws)
