Honest opinions (how bad is the build quality)

  Scirocco 2.0 tsi
Want a clio 17/82 FF next month, would it be in my bank accounts interests to buy the newest one i can afford? were alot of the problems ironed out by 04/05 or am i likely to have just as much trouble with an 05 plate as i am with an 03 plate of the same mileage? Which am i likely to have less annoying little problems with.

Also, the cup packs on the 182, is 1 cup pack just the anthracite wheels and the other some fancy electrical extras?

Cheers.

in all honesty mate i really do believe it changes from car to car, mines now on 123k, but the only rattle i have is from my drivers door card, though iv heard of cars on 30k that are falling to bits lol

i sugest look and try a few different cars to get a feel

For a start mate they all rattle (atleast ones that havent been ripped apart and foam padding put in)

They arent the most un-reliable cars on the road admitidley if there cherished and looked after well. The achillies heal of the Renault's is neglect im adimant about that.

Mines is coming up for 8 years old in March and is mechanically sound, i did have some very minor problems when i first got her but nothing that made me have to take it off the road.

Your problay better buying one off of here as most if not all are looked after religiously by members.

Hope this helps

I can't say much about about the rs's as I've never owned one, but my 54 plate 1.2 on 40k is completely silent inside going along the road, not a rattle whatsoever.

As for the cup packs: one gives the car a cup spoiler and splitter, the other gives the car anthracite wheels and cup suspension.

Like all cars, depends how well its been looked after. But as a general rule, I always go for as late/ low mileage as I can afford.

Heard about quite a lot of gear gaitors breaking, mine has! 05 plate on 47k. Also have a very annoying squeak from the boot since I put my ICE in :( apart from that seems okay so far, but I've only been driving it a few months!

My opinion with French cars is that 'if its still rattling, it hasnt fallen off yet' which is a good thing :)

Tbh, my cup doesnt rattle much on 72k, its the blooming Pioneer cd player that needs to be filled with cotton wool to stop it buzzing :S

In regards to build quality, you will find the price of clios getting cheaper but the parts stay the same price. With the amount that goes wrong on these things it would be cheaper to buy 2 cars and take the parts out of one as they break.

Speaking personally ofcourse.. If I were you, i'd be looking at buying as new as possible, but not at all costs. I've had both ph1 172 and 182ff. Both had a problem very early on but were very quickly fixed by the dealer and no problems there after.
If I was looking to buy one now, i'd certainly be looking for a low mileage, one owner.. max. two, that has never been molested. I'd also be buying privately so I can meet the person who's been driving it, and see how they treat the car for myself.
Like someone above has already mentioned, two cup packs were available for the 182.. the spoiler pack and the handling pack. I'd be looking at making sure it had both of these.
There's loads of interesting and informative stuff on here about other options, so wont repeat it lol.
Good luck with your search.. buyers market at the moment!

It just depends on the car mate you could get one that been rallied from birth but only has 30k on the clock or you could get one thats been driven with care that has 60k on the clock, just look at a few and get an eye what to look for. mines got just over 70k on the clock and dont rattle at all and runs sweet, just make sure you take your time if in doubt leave it out.

Mine is 6 years old, has had cam done, Ive had to change the Aux, suspension parts (track rods/ball joints/shocks) and a Xenon.

Dont think thats too bad to say its pushing 100k and not particularly driven gently!

Yeah they rattle a bit but its not a major problem tbh.

Mines 5 years old, 44,500 miles and it does'nt rattle really. only had it about a month tho and had to get coolant pipe done then a week later had to go in for fan belt but to be honest i think that was just bad timing not a bad car lol.

don't think mine's bad at all but they're not a patch on contemporary VWs (for example), but no surprise there.

having come from an older Peugeot, the thing that i've noticed is that some of the wearing parts seem to have a dubious service life, even in comparison with another French manufacturer - thinking engine mounts, suspension rubbers, etc. there are numerous parts that seem (to me) to be affected by poor design/construction/materials.

other than that, i think it's luck of the draw regarding major mechanical bother; a lot's going to depend upon the car's history.
