How can you check for knackered shocks?

basically test drove a car and it was a very bumpy ride, the owner said its because it has 17's/s**t tyres on it and he is probs right, but i would just like to check the front shocks somehow to see if they are ok, any suggestions?

valver, but it had soem aftermarket adjustible shocks, adjustable dampers something along those lines, just be a bit worried in case the shcoks are fucked.

edit: he has some shitty alloys on it now but he reckons whne he had a set of lensos on it a few weeks back the drive was alot smoother?

MMmmmmm on my old standard valver you could hardly push them down and the ride was very hard and bumpy, not bouncy and soft. but i think if shocks are worn it would make it very bouncy!

^^ To be fair, if you're serious about the car then it might be worth actually jacking it and taking the wheels off to check... if there isn't a problem then the seller shouldn't mind?
