How do I know if my engine / gearbox mounts are on their way out ?

  Clio 197
Right I have been told my mounts may be cream crackered meaning the engine is sitting too far back which is causing vibration problems with my exhaust

From rocking the engine there is no excessive movement in the engine , can anyone visually check my engine mount (top one) below and offer any advice if it looks knackered ? Is it possible to move the engine forward slightly ?

if the exhaust is rattling against the subframe 9/10 its going to be the rear mount 'dog mount' thats gone

can anyone advise if the upper engine mount in post #2 looks knackered? Should i have the space either side of teh rubber strips?

I have been out to check this mount specifically and when rocking the engine there is slight movement in the engine but this mount is moving quite a bit within that.

Final question - is it worth replacing the dogbone and taking it from there. To summarise i am not getting any engine knocks or anything, my Ktec stealth is vibrating on the chassis at the rear when hidden under the bumper , according to Ktec this could be because the engine is sitting to far back.

HELP!

Mine looks the same as yours at 50k miles! Wondering if the rubber wears as shown allowing the mount to move more?

Just got my hands on a dogbone mount with powerflex bushes so going to try this first!

Grab hold of the engine and give it a good shake. Can you see excessive movement or knocking from the manifold on the subframe?

No knocking, not sure if the movement is excessive but it is stopped by the rear of the top engine mount in post #2

Not had my 182 for long but giving the engine a good shunt with my hands the engine mount seems fairly stable...

When i put the gearbox into first i get a small clunk, ive looked into this, i think its half because the exhaust touches the frame at the back and also that the dog bone needs changing... which might stop it all together.

Dogbone is only a £35 for OEM fix... so ive bought one and will be fitting next week. (changing it on my 1.2 at 70k made a good difference)

What sort of noises are you getting from your exhaust? ive jacked my mounts up with copper pipes because i cant stand how my OEM system sits so low, i had a clunk and it was the heatshield lose... that fixed now i still have a rattle i think the exhaust is either blowing or rattling somewhere.

Are you going for oem dogbone or powerflex??

My issue is with the edge of the backbox catching on the piece of metal in the picture below

This only occurred when I adjusted my backbox right up to try and get it hidden. When the system is warm it rattles and vibrates on here- ktec have said its engine mount related as my exhaust is sitting too far to the rear, thing is I could chuck money at it and replace the mounts but for the upper engine on in post 2 it's £82 alone so I am reluctant to do that without good reason - hence this thread :)

I can't work out what that pictures showing! That looks like a very skinny scratched exhaust

from that picture of you're top engine mount it looks fine! but the actual rubber part between the mount and the car body shears in two you can only check this by removing the upper part of the mount. by the looks of it you have a poorly installed exhaust and will definatly be a fubared lower dog bone mount.

Loosen the the engine mount and upper gearbox mount and pull the engine forward then retighten to the correct torque (62Nm iirc).

What exhaust do you have? I had this with a ktec stealth but managed to get it to sit ok eventually. The back box was knocking off one of the rear springs.

Engine mounts will more than likely not be the problem but the doggone won't be helping if it's worn. Powerflex bushes will help this one.

Im going with OEM for now because its not that expensive, i need it changed now-ish for peace of mind and ive read a few things like getting it fitted wrong and the powerflex mount making some holes bigger so just went with OEM for now.

its the top edge of the backbox when viewed from the underside (as though you were lying on your back looking up - which i was)

Ok, i will need to have a further inspection of the mount then, the exhaust is better now but being let down by the fouling on this section - i have had it off twice since fitting to adjust etc.

Thanks, so the upper mount( as pictured) and the one underneath the battery then?

I have a ktec supersports, it fits really well except for this little niggle and if it sat a little further forward would be completely stealth as intended. Hopefully the pulling forward of the engine might give me the 1/2 inch or so gap to allow the system to sit fully behind the bumper

Out of interest how much was a complete dogbone from renault?
