How do the standard 182's sound and which is the best exhaust ?

  Clio 182
Hi there,

My first post, so I best make it a good one.

I've recently (Sunday) bought myself a 182 to replace a 305BHP Impreza. My first impressions of the Clio are very good, its a very quick and nimble car and although I've read some reviews about it being cheaply made, to be honest, having driven a classic Impreza, its like being in a Merc.

Anyway, the reason I swapped over was due to the "effort" of driving the Impreza, loads of noise and having to push the car all the time (big turbo). Now I know the Clio likes being above 5k, but it's a nice relaxed day to day car, if you drive it like one .. only problem is the owner before me replaced the standard exhaust, with a single box with two pipes. Forgive me as I don't know much about Clio exhausts but I assume this one is louder than it should be.

It's not massively loud, but enough to make it sound like a boyracer to the general public.. the engine helps that and gives it a meaty growl, but you know what I mean.

My question, is this something I should get used to, or would I be better looking for a more standard exhaust ? what the general thought from the owners of these cars ?

More than likely the exhaust was changed because there crap fall apart rot etc. i have a Ktec exhaust love it but it is quite loud however it is decated and middle box is a straight through. They do a silencer version on the same one which I would assume would be what your after.

i used to own a standard 172 which was quite quiet, then had a 182 with a scorpion cat back system with a decat and was very throaty. When it had the standard system there was still a very nice sound from it, but not very noticeable

It's something I guess I can live with, little let down as I wanted a "sleeper" if you like .. certainly attracts more attention than my previous cars

Get some pics up of the exhaust on it mate. As for standard, there really isn't any noticeable noise from it. A slight growl when booting it, but nothing loud.

As mentioned though, the standard exhausts are made of cheese. Mine will be getting replaced soon, holding out to see what the new BTM will be like.

They sound rubbish (IMO) standard. Although mine now sounds a little different due to a leak *somewhere*....

Does your leak sound like a squeaky fan belt? Think it's the gasket that often wears keep meaning to get it changed but something always comes up

Go on youtube. There's a nice collection of all the different exhaust notes.
Personally like the scorpion R192. When I do replace mine, thats what I'll be getting.

If you are like me and don't want a loud exhaust, just get a Janspeed, don't bother with all this de-cat crap, makes them louder and you have to change at MOT time.
Cost about £300 lifetime warranty as well.

Milltek was ok too, nice and subtle (hate loud systems) mine just fitted like it was jigged 20mm out all over!

as above, the janspeed with centre silencer isn't much louder than stock and very nicely made. Currently £360, or £330 without center silencer. I've fitted one of each this week so far

Is that fitted ?

I'll get some photos tomorrow and post them up, maybe someone will want to buy it ? or swap it for something quieter ..

as said either a janspeed or scorpian rs192. i have the latter and it isnt overly loud until you put your foot down.

Btb's sound great as do Piper systems i reckon ;)

My brothers janspeed sounded OK on his T.

If i had one my money would go to BTB though.

I'm more confused that I was before ..

I need to come along to a meet .. (assuming you have meets) and have a listen .. You tube doesn't do it justice.

There's three adjustment points for a start on the rs192. So you have to muck about with them all to try and get it right.

i have heard this, always wondered why it is harder to fit though?

the assembly of it isn't very well thought out. Joins in strange places, awkward hangers and adjuster bars, and even with all that adjustment available, you still have to use cable ties to pull the rear mounts into alignment.

Silenced janspeed ftw (thanks dan) soooo much better than the unsilence version. Defo not a boi racer system

I have the RS192. It booms a bit on the motorway. Fit isn't too bad imo, but it will leak about a month after fitting lol and need a jiggle.

If I did again I'd have the Janspeed and if I had the money it would go on a Btb.

oh right learn something new everyday. you would of thought scorpian would have fabricated them to be an easy fit!

it's not as "nice" an exhaust as the piper, but i'm finding the janspeed with center silencer to be very popular amongst the more mature owner who'd be embarrased to have something loud. Price is excellent too IMO
