how does the handbrake work on 172

Evening all
So my 172 failed on the parking brake (amongst other things) the other day. So I need to have a look at it. Unfortunately I have no idea how the parking brake works on these cars. Is the parking brake integrated into the the visable rear discs and calipers or is there a separate system located somewhere?

It's integrated into the callipers.

Was it just one side that failed? It may be a snapped cable.

It failed on efficency. 13% I believe the pass is 15%. The tester has noted that he saw some staining on one of the calipers so could be leaking, also I had left the car standing for about a month just before Xmas when I came the drive it one of the brakes had got stuck on slightly, it did release after a moment, and I gave the car a good few runs before mot time to clean the brakes up
