How long does timing belt last on 172?

I am currently putting a 172 engine in my 182. It has 82k on the clock (new engine) all the timing is already connected etc and i don't really want the hassle of changing it to be honest. My question basically is can a timing belt last 82k as if not that would mean it's been replaced fairly recently no? I thought they on average lasted 65-75k. My old engine had a brand new belt on last month, but the valves are absolutely battered and the engine is kaput. Is it okay to use that old/new belt from the old engine? A friend said he personally wouldn't use. I really am not sure how the engine died on me, nor are anybody else that's looked it over with me. I know everybody says replace them while it's out but i've put loads into this car since it died on me so am looking for the cheapest option

Well i am not sure what to do then as i really can't afford another £100+ on a timing belt kit. I had to pay £450 for a garage to tell me the engine is kaput, another £300 on help to fit the new engine. £42 on oil and filter. The joys of motoring...

Id take the old belt off the other engine and fit it up to the new with all the pulleys, tensioner and dephaser..

It's just been fitted and the valves are toast so it didn't run correctly?

id run it, why are people so worried about it, they aren't made of cheese.. get a new belt on its own and some cam caps..

I'm assuming you can change the belt yourself?

Changing the whole engine with the help of a friend, his knowledge is a lot deeper than mine so I'd probably let him do the belt if it's needed. Basically didn't have the car long set of at the lights at 3000rpm and it was as if I took the key out, no sound of damage, just came to a stop. 100% found out the timing was out, but not before the lights as was running like a dream 20 minutes before the incident. Cam belt looks fine, looks brand new in fact. One garage it went to are saying the aux belt wrapped around the cam, but when I looked it wasn't wrapped round anything.. I think they stole my belt as it's not even in the car anymore

So - the belt was changed on your original engine, then a month later the vavles went for a date with the pistons? I'm guessing poor workmanship on the original belt change.

Who changed it originally? Was it whilst you owned the car?

Belt was changed by previous owner in July. The second garage I went to are saying it's poor workmanship too. Funny thing is... and i hate to admit it... i had the car 4 hours before this happened. I drove it 120 miles down the country and was fine. Here is a list of what was replaced:
'Renault timing belt kit, genuine defaser pully and water pump. Also had new alternator belt, power steering pump, genuine oil and filter. Also had 4 brand new tyres, Nankang ns 2 sport. Recently had new rear discs, pads and caliper. Had new pads in the font and discs cleaned.'

This is how it sits at the moment though

If you have a receipt for the work i'd have taken it back the the garage that did it originally. Problem is, now you've taken the engine out you don't have a leg to stand on.

I'd change the belts and any cheaper bits in the kit.

If you're going to change it, do it properly.

What about? The belt I couldn't care less as I just brought a new one for £13 if it cost £50 id be annoyed

The fact that the valves have hit the pistons and bent. It sounds a lot like the work they did a month ago has caused or at leaset been a factor in the engine destroying itself - therefore they should have been the first peope spoken to.

Who did the belt change?

The guy I brought it off apparently undertook all the work. I had the two garages look at it after it died on me

Ahh - there's your issue then! Nothing you can do other than do it right this time and move on.

By do it right, i mean with the correct Renault tools, in the correct way. If you don't at best it'll be down on power, at worst those valves will be saying 'hi' to the pistons again!

This car is a nightmare... The belt looks pretty worn and I'd say due for a change. I simply haven't got the funds to pay for a new belt so unfortunately I'm taking the risk that it will last a little longer. I have no timing tools so will have to be sent off regardless. If I had another car I'd just leave the car for a month on my drive but work want their car back so will be left with no way of transport. I know a guy that's an expert in these things so if it lasts a month I will let him do it. I wish I could use the old belt on the old engine as is new but everyone is saying don't bother. To top it all off I'm having trouble with the alternator bracket fitting on this new engine now

Yeah, as retarded as it seems I'm leaving the old timing belt on... I don't have the funds for a new kit then have somebody do it right. I've already spent a K or more doing all this. I never expected this to happen.

Yeah, considering selling. I spent £1500 on the thing, another £600 getting a new engine and help fitting £450 before that to find out the problem. Obviously I didn't expect the engine to blow up as the timing was done etc hence why I thought it was a snatch. Ah well, what's done is done. If not I'll convince work to borrow me their Volvo and use that and let it sit there for now

Get the engine to a specialist, without it being in the car the job will be easier and therefore labour is less. Whilst with the specialist ask about fitting engine to car.
Remove car from garage it is with and take it to specialist.
Enjoy trouble free motoring.

Or, fit engine to car as is by a random garage and post in a month about the problems you're having.

Didn't you mention the other day you are saving for a Skyline? Isn't it worth using some of those savings to repair this so that it's not going to be worth scrap value once you're done with it and save a bit longer for the Skyline?

Guess you're right... Probably gonna let it sit on the drive for a month. I don't want to break into that fund if I'm honest. If I can use works car it won't matter

Good folks on CS would have told you it`s fooked for free!

Seriously though,get it to your closest specalist,Mick at Diamond Motors in Long Eaton,and using your water pump & dephaser,£500 might see you driving it away with engine fitted and new belts.

I'm amazed you can write that you're to skint to pay that little extra for a belt kit to fix this properly when you have savings to one side for a Skyline. It beggars belief tbh!
