How much oil should a 1.2 16V drink

  Renaultsport Mégane R26

Hi there all,

Just wondering whether anyone knows how often it should be that a 2002 1.2 16V Dynamique needs its oil topping up? Mine seems to drink the stuff like water with oil being needed every 1500/2000 miles. Also, does anyone find when parked on steep inclines that the service light comes on and the computer says that oil is needed when you start the thing up again?

Thanks for all your help,

Dave

I think the spec allow for 1 liter ever 600 miles but Ill check to make sure.

The sensor will misread on a slope its due to the placment of it in the tank.

Just check the oil filter isnt leaking as theres a technical note out about failed ones which would be covered under warenty.

I had two 1.2 16vs. Both did 10k and never needed any topping up at all. An engine should not need topping up between yearly/12k services.

check for leaks from the sump...thats what mine had.......but never needed topping up all the way to its 18k service

with the servicing every 2 years or 18K then keep an eye on the level, must admit i used to top up a fair bit in the 1.2 dynamique

The amount of oil a 1.2 can burn is upto 1 liter per 600 miles it may burn none but thats the tolerance they dont have to do anything unless it burns more.

I have had loads of vehicles ranging from 50 year old classic motorcycles/cars to the latest technology and none of them showed even the slightest drop on the dipstick between recommended services. I have stripped an engine down to the final nut and bolt and rebuilt it from scratch and that didnt lose a single drop of oil either.

If the tolerance is really 1 litre every 600 miles then I have to say that is absolutely piss poor. No arguing, no excuse, no defence what so ever. Any car manufacturer quoting that figure should not be in business, full stop.

Perhaps I could just about tolerate it over the first 600 miles if running-in but I would expect it to stop losing oil completely by 1000 miles.

Doesnt a litre every 600 miles have emissions implications?

Renault quote that 1 litre per 1000 KM = 625 miles approx... is acceptable..

We have just replaced a 20Kmiles F4R that was using 1 litre to 500 miles!!!
