Just got the insurance sorted out for the new R27 pick up thursday, and some how the new car is saving me money, only around £58 a year but its still a saving! How on earth does that work a 182 bhp 3 year old car worth about 6k to trade vs. a 197 bhp brand new car worth nearly 16k.

Same as me mate, I have an R26 which i pay £1200 fully comp and a W'reg Vectra 2.5V6 as a work horse and pay £116 less fully comp.....when i asked why considering the vectra i only paid £1400 for they replied with - we have statistics for the vectra i.e claims for number stolen, crashed bla bla and as the megane is such a new model we have to agree a figure!! load of shite if you ask me.

197 is more modern - you're (theoretically) less likely to lose a leg/arm/major motor function in a car with better safety features. I think it's injury payouts that cost more than fixing cars.

Another factor is ease of repair, parts cost, cost to repair.

For example a bmw 5 series has an aluminium structure and in a front end smash it wouldn't take much to write the car off.

i believe its 5* euro NCAP and the 172/182 is only 4*, maybe that has something to do with it?

i went from a 1.2 16v 5 door expression to an 05 plate 1,2 16v dynamique and i saved about 25 coins.

MK2 drivers take note, unless you have a mint 182/trophy or V6 they aren't worth bugger all anymore, especially MK2 172's..
