Mk5 Golf Gti
Hi guys,
Decided I would start a little Project thread for what is my first Clio Sport. I am based in the Harrogate, North Yorkshire area and have seen a few 172/182's about recently, if you're based near me give me a shout and I will look out for you, anyway onto the car. I previously owned a little 1.6 Mini Cooper which was a brilliant little car, however, roughly 4 months ago now I got a new job who paid for my travel expenses (Bus to work) which meant I was on the look out for almost a 'weekend toy', something faster than the Mini, something I could drive on evenings, to Leeds and back once a week and something I could thoroughly enjoy driving. After a long time searching it seemed that a Clio Sport was the car for me, with a budget of £3,500 and after a lot of research I bought a beautiful 182 Cup in Racing blue.
The Clio has:
-68k miles on the clock
-Cambelt/Dephaser and Waterpump replaced at 63k miles only a year ago.
-Owned by enthusiasts who have serviced the car themselves (I have around 100+ receipts for parts)
-Miltek Exhaust with brand new Cat only 400 miles ago
-Passed MOT last month with no advisories
-Short Shifter
-Grooved Discs and Ferodo Racing Brake Pads
-Uprated poly bushes & Braided Brake lines
-Aero Bonnet catches
-Lots of carbon (Bullets, Washer blanks, rear wiper surround, rear exhaust surround and rear bumper carbon strip, pictures to follow)
-Brand new oil cooler
-2x Brand new toyo proxes t1r (100 miles old, rear's need changing next month too)
-Brand new engine mount (50 miles old)
-Brand new rear shocks
-Abundance of service history
As you can see the car has been thoroughly looked after and really does run brilliantly. Now I actually only have one service stamp in the handbook but this is because previous to me owning it, the owners have serviced the car themselves. This is backed up by the fact I have a folder bursting with receipts, probably 100+? Anyway...
A couple of photos from when the car was first dropped off with me!

As you can see the little clio is in beautiful condition and im absolutley overjoyed with it so far!
Here are a few photos of how the engine bay is currently sitting.

As mentioned earlier there was a lot of carbon trim already on the car itself and when I found out how much this stuff goes for I was shocked to say the least...

Please excuse the dirty car but at least it gives you an idea of how its all sitting! So thats all the good news, cant own a clio without there being some sort of bad news and this is where mine started
I was insured on the clio and it was taxed and ready to go, I took it out the night I got it for a little drive as I couldn't contain my excitement! (we have all been there with a new car) I noticed that the exhaust note of the Miltek was rather loud, now because I have never owned a clio sport before, and I have never owned a Miltek system before I decided to have a look underneath and check everything was right. Quick check before I went out revealed nothing, as far as I was aware it was just the system and that's what it should of sounded like... After about 30 minutes of driving I heard a bit of a knock and the exhaust note got significantly louder, pulled over had a look again and I was greeted with this..

It was going through the Cat but no further, and wasn't going through the silencer.. Hence the excessive noise. The morning after I took it to my mates house and we set about getting the exhaust repositioned, managed to get it all sorted in under an hour and I haven't had a problem since! Job well done

Anyway, decided to give it the first proper clean in my ownership! Cleaned, polished and detailed. One of my best mates also owns a 182 and only lives around the corner so I went round to show him my new purchase, whilst showing him the new rear shocks we could hear a sound i can only describe as 'bacon sizzling' and the bad luck was back again... a puncture in the rear tyre! Decided to have a look at the other tyres and discovered a very small nail lodged in the front left tyre too, two new tyres it was
So that was all sorted, happy days! Oh wait, nope not yet... Discovered a loose cambelt cover bolt, turns out the cambelt cover itself was threaded and the bolt was pretty much just sitting in there completely loose.
There were also few things that I was not happy with and something was definitely wrong!
-A knocking, almost as if something was catching coming from the front wheels when accelerating.
-A loud Knock when on full lock
-Vibration that I could feel through the clutch pedal when setting off in first gear.
-Coolant was leaking from somewhere, however it was only leaking when under pressure..
So, got it booked into the local garage I always use, (can't rate them more, they are brilliant) I asked the guys to give the car a thorough looking over and try diagnose some of the problems I was having. Turns out, the first two knocking noises were coming from the wheel weights that had been put on the new tyres, Knock on weights instead of stick on weights. The vibration I could feel was a knackered engine mount that had literally snapped in half and the coolant was leaking because a couple of jubilee clips weren't as tight as they should of been.
They guys fixed it all for me and for the hours of labour and parts that they needed replacing it only cost me a reasonable £230 which I was very happy with! Here is my brand spanking new engine mount...
