i feel sick :( cambelt snapped..

lol oh. Thought you meant the block. yeah the car will get you over a grand depending on what you can shift.

Also what Mick said from Diamond is so true, one particular comment that stood out to me as being something people can't seem to grasp, is that the specialists are not companies designed to suck cask from your pocket, they do an excellent job and maybe the total job might be £x more, but that 'x' isn't always as much as you think, and in some cases it's '-x' as they can be cheaper as they don't have to account for something going wrong, they know what needs doing and how to do it, so their pricing structures I imagine are pretty accurate! I really feel for you in a way because it's not nice for it to happen to anyone, but put it down to experience, get on with it and don't buy cheap again!!
 
Sorry hear it's knackered. The route I would take is- get a new engine, mechanic fits it for you free as he ruined the last one. You lose the cost of a second hand engine. He looses some time which he could have spent badly fitting cambelts.

Cambelt issue.. new thread

okay.. just been to see her at the garage it was recovered to last night.

mechanic took oil cap off and asked to turn her over, the cams were spinning..

now the car has locked up.

the starter motor was still engaging very fast like it had no spark plugs in.

aux belt is still there.

when the car is home, i will take the top corner cover off and see if the cam belt is still a belt
 
You need to start cutting your losses. Get the car to someone that knows what they are doing, get the engine fixed properly, don't modify the car in future and keep it for as long as you can to extract some value out of it. You'll need to, given what you've spent on the two cars.

Please please please please please please take it to a specialist if you want to keep the engine!!!

Myself and everyone else who's said are not saying it for the good of our health! Don't keep starting it, "damage limitation" springs to mind!

It will have slipped on the bottom pulley and done the exhaust valves, all 8...

i havn't got £1000 to get this sorted. if i can findout the problem "jumped belt" for example.. then i have a rough idea if i can afford to get this sorted.
the mechanic who fitted the dephaser should be able to look at the car and tell me whats wrong, seems how he done the job twice already.
if the cambelt is still there and timed up.. its another issue.

i need to work out my options, best way to do this is try and see the fault.
do i say to dave, i dont want you to look at my car.. you already ruined it.. lose a 10yr mate.
or let him "check" his work...?

id let him 'check' (so you stay mates, i guess alls he has tried doing is a favour) but i WOULD NOT let him attempt any resolutions or touch it

Yeah I agree with gary, looking is with your eyes (for want of a better phrase)

Have to say though, if my mate damaged my engine like that, I wouldn't be so soft with him. You paid for something, which after 72 hours failed. Mates or not that's way out...

We all feel for you mate, hence everyone trying to get you to go to a specialist. I don't know enough about engines to say what's broken for sure/how much it will cost to repair. From what I understand a new (second hand I mean) engine is sometimes cheaper but don't quote me on that

Give the man a chance. He has screwed up. Let him put it right mate! We all start somewhere. If he is a good mate if will want to put it right. And you will have forgotten it ever happened in a few decades!

If it's broken already then let the guy have a go at fixing it. If he can't, then the cheapest solution for you would be to drop a second hand complete engine in there. There are two or three available on here priced between £300 and £600.
 
dephaser has gotta be worth 70/80£ with reciept, its only done 45miles.?
thinking weigh my cat in.. £50
i should be able to get 250/300£ to fund another motor

I've had many un-easy customers in the past worried about my ability's after already forking out for a job to be done once and as I've got nothing to hide gladly explain things and answer questions (I even put things in writting as I fully document everything from servicing to diagnostic reports). Recently, one customer paid a local garage £580 to do his '182 timing belt which is not only is top whack but they did wrong (twice). He said "It went in quick and came out slow and thirsty"... sure enough the timing was wrong which I checked and demonstrated to him on the spot which cost him £20 (The price to replace the end caps and a beer my way). Eventually it cost him another £380 to replace the belt run and re-time it (along with replacing specific parts that the other garage didn't change like the siezed aux belt tensioner) which is money he could've saved IF he'd come to me in the first place.

Believe it or not, people like myself, Fred and Danny aren't here to extract your cash. Yes we charge for our time but we also have a genuine passion for supporting these vehicles which is more than you can say about the main dealer networks and other independents and doing a job right/keeping the customer happy is our number one goal.

get it all rebuilt by a a specialist, will probably be cheaper and great piece of mind. if you buy a new engine, you never know what kinda life its had!
 
Has anybody actually confirmed whats failed on the engine??

I've read the thread twice now but can't see anyone confirming this. :S

can we just get real for a minute. He's done it twice and fucked it up twice
 
erm.. i still not got my car back.. its on the back of another friends recovery truck, was abit late last night for a big dirty diesel up my road... but i have been to see the car today, a different mechanic from the one who did the dephaser said the belt hasnt snapped, maybe slipped and dropped the valves.

somebody on here said, the bottom pully

it is spinning over very fast as it will have no compression due to the valves being bent by hitting pistons. (As Paul has said) With the price of used engines, the cheapest way to fix is a new used engine.

If you've researched it before you start i.e. read the manual, then it is fairly straight forward - just different to your typical cam belt with keyed pulleys.

My guess is that most people who don't know different undo the crank pulley see no key, sh*t themselves and then just try and bodge it not realising you need to immobilise the crank with the pin at the front of the block.
 
get it towed to BTM or Birchdown - then problems will resolve themselves
