I think I just got myself a sat-nav bargain?!!! From Sainsbury's

First time I have ventured out of my house since December 27th (due a stinking bout of 'flu) went down to Sainsbury's to get some groceries.

Anyway thought about doing a lucky dip on the lottery, but forgot about the lottery when I saw a cardboard stand with only 2x Sony NV-U50 display boxes (empty DVD cases) on, Pricemarked £199.99 reduced down to a seemingly very reasonable price (which i will give further on in this post).

But to be honest I wasn't sure on it, so I put it back and went home, forgetting about the lottery.

Got home and the price was nagging me - seemed really cheap, especially for a Sony product, anyway I fired up the mac to have a quick butcher's on the net went to a few electronic retailer sites and play.com:

http://www.play.com/Electronics/Ele....html?searchstring=sony+nv-u50&searchsource=0

Saw the price there and thought "That's a bleeding bargain from Sainsbury's!!"

Rushed down there....
Two empty cases on the stand..
Thinking "great!"
Take the case over to customer services.
Fella manning customer services was talking to some lady.
Showed him the case the case and he said "Oh we might have a problem.."
"Typical"
He said "this lady wants one and i think that might be the only one left, we're waiting for someone to come back from the store room"
Sainsbury worker comes back holding TWO - YES!!!

So I got the last one for 99 quid - I think that is bleeding cheap, considering play.com's price.

That's a good price but probably not a mistake as Sony have the new version available for £199. My local Sainsbury's also have them available for £99.

'tis a bit of a bargain for a satnav thingy but I'm not sure about the performance - have a google for a review because I'm not sure they're as good as TomTom etc? (sorry lol)

I might be wrong though lol

Have it up and running and see how it goes - if it's really poor then take it back!

Otherwise, for £99 you can't go that far wrong really ! :)

Sainsbury always have a few bargains, I bought a 32 inch HD TV from them 3 months ago, and it is still cheaper than the stuff offered in the January sales.

Well I've charged it through the mains charger (has a four hour life on battery) and it's set it's location, so I might go out for a quick spin now just to try it out.

Then tomorrow, in daylight I might look at discretely threading the 12v charger under the dashboard etc and having a proper fiddle with it.

I still think it seems a good price for 99 quid (now will I be saying that when it decides to get me lost?!?!?! ;) )

I think this model came out in January 2006 - so it's not ancient, but then we are talking gadgets and we all know how things get superceeded within weeks.

very good units, I work for Sainsburys (Well in the bakery, but stil lget a 15% discount) Could get one of these for £85!

The staff were stashing them in the warehouse so they could buy them on payday! Very few went on shop floor!

Other bargaisnm include a Sony 32" Bravia HD LCD Flatscreen TV for £499 (£425 to staff) And they have just had some new 32" random branded HD LCD Flatscreen TV's for £399!

  SLK 350
Thought these Sony units were plagued by all sorts of problems?

Correct me if im wrong.

*edit*

Just read some review on T3 and they state its a vast improvement over its previous models, good price in that case I reckon.

I haven't really had a proper play with it yet, or sorted out an installation in the 182 (not happy with it being stuck to the windscreen).
The two negative factors of the Sony NV-U50 that I've come across so far are:

Entering a postcode, it'll only allow you to enter the first four letters / numbers. Instead of a full post code, so you have to enter the street / road of your destination too.

The hard copy manual is crap, the instructions are not detailed whatsoever, however there is a full manual on CD, which came with the sat nav system.

The direction volume has to be turned up to maximum (well on the motorway) but that might due to my aftermarket exhaust system.

Pluses are:

It's very quick on re-calculating routes, quite surprising how quick it actually is.

Cost.

Build quality.

Clarity of lcd screen.

Very good audio directions.

If you can find one - buy one.

Bloody hell, that's a bargain!!! I'm actually quite interested in that but I bet they're all gone by now.

As for the Sat Nav - sounds like a good bargain to me.

I got my TomTom Go 510 yesterday (for a lot more than that lol) and I absolutely LOVE it.

i've been playing with my 510 a bit last night and today and the bluetooth functions are great, and the volume of the voice instructions go really really loud.

if you bought from the shops then u should have got the 710, they are going for the same price as the 510 now for some reason.
