I wanna 172!!!!! Help?!

  Flame Red 172!
Hey everybody,

Brand new member but have been in love with the 172 for ages!...Am 25 and decided to get myself one before the missus starts talking about kids and I have to get a Vauxhall Meriva or something...you only live once right?!...right?!?!

Only problem is that i'm having some difficulty finding one in my price range, looking to spend less than £5k if possible with decent miles (what is decent miles on a Y reg 172 anyway?) So i'm just really looking for:

1. Bit of advice on how much I can expect to pay for a 172, decent miles, FSH, etc
2. Anyone know where I can get one, i live in Colchester, Essex and can't travel nationwide but will go up to about 100 miles.

Also, bit worried that as soon as I buy one something is going to go wrong that's gonna cost me loads and loads of cash...any pointers relating to what to ask about when enquiring about cars I see on Autotrader, etc?

Probably repeating other posts that are here already so sorry for that...I JUST WANNA 172 DAMMIT!!!!

Thanks guys, hopefully soon i'll be able to put a picture of my new 172 on my profile...too embarrassed to even say what i'm driving at the moment!

Cheers! :rasp:

high mileage 172 around 2000/2001 plates can be had for £3000.

If any thing goes wrong you have saved yourself 2000, and that can pay for a new engine.;)

I think that's what the RS Clios are all about - you just want to have one.

I think they are pretty robust unless they're been modified and then it's a lottery IMO (aprt from modified exhausts as you'll need a new one if it hasn't). Look for one with less than 70k miles and makes sure the timing belt's been changed (including the pulleys). Then spend a few quid to get the brakes right (new fluid and pads, possibly discs), changes the engine oil and gearbox oil and air filter = sorted!

4.5 to 5.5k to buy one I reckon.

Cheers, Rob

LOL...No no...much worse than that!

Thanks for your comments guys!

Any more general advice is most welcome...i'm one of these complete geeks who does so much research on something before he does it that headaches ensue on a regular basis!

Thanks again and if anyone is selling in Essex or surrounding areas PM me!

Ah, got you thinking now haven't I!.....

Hmm not a corsa, what could I say I have....maybe a G-reg Escort 1.6lx...maybe, just maybe that would be worse than a corsa?!

Not saying that's what it is of course....lol

Well got my finances sorted today and now all I gotta do is find myself the car, absolutely cannot wait people!

Really want to find out what the deal is with Cambelt changes, timing belt changes etc...have seen some real minters on Autotrader and other places that have done about 50k and are on Y or 51 plates for about 5k which seems like a good deal...just don't want to go buy one and then have the cambelt need changing straight away!

Also, any clues you can give me as whether the 172's are cheap or super expensive to fix when those stupid annoying things (that are always unexpected and take you by surprise!) go wrong with them as they do with most cars i've owned?

You input is muchos muchos appreciado'd!

:D

That's great mate, thanks for the info...only problem is that I can't access most of the threads, don't have permission or something?!

Could really do with getting hold of the parts list and pricing one, and the common problems one could be some very very useful info on there!

Anyone help me access these other links?

You will notice a HUGE leap in performance from a Escort LX to a 172 and will definately be smiling lots.

I know, been used to driving G60's and Golf GTi's in the past so know that it's gonna be a shock to the system but went away snowboarding for a while so when I got back I was broke, had to get the 'scort - not bad though @ £350 - 85k!

Cannot wait to get my mits on the 172, just gonna have be patient and hold out for the right one though, must not be tempted to buy the first one I see...gonna be hard I think!

Still trying to figure out whether I want the Mk1 or Mk2 though, think the Mk1 shape looks the Sh*t (Shark-like even!) but the interior on the Mk2 is more 'refined'...Oh I dunno, guess i'll get what I can afford!

Whatever it ends up being I know i'm in for some fun! :rasp:
