I want to build a 172 replica is it worth the time and money...

M

mini-valver

Been done loads of times to various quality levels. Combine 04's is nice but AdamHodg has done the lot to his 1.2, full kit and engine. Awesome car but better off buying a 172 in the first place TBH which im sure hell be the first to tell you after the coin hes spent.....

i would rather save and buy a 172 if it was me but if that's what you want to do then fair play to you

the problem is im only 18 and theres no way i will get insured on a 172 (not even with on my mums 21 years no claims behind me)
but by using ebay... how much u rekon it could cost?

The money spent will be best saved.

Adding bodywork will still cost you in additional insurance costs if they let you at all.

^ as Day says mate, insurance will still go up if you want to make it a replica. I'd stick with the VTR for the mo and save.

Personally I'd keep the vtr and save for a real 172, it's going to cost alot to make it look like one, so you may aswell sust save that money instead. But there are some nice replicas that I've seen on here.

i do see what your all saying about just getting the real thing but... i simply dont have the money to pay for one and the insurance. i dunno, alot of the fun seems to be achiving it yourself... i mean to build one..... how much would insurance be with one years no claims?

  LY V6 with Recaros
But think about how much the insurance would be after declaring all those mods, and paying out for the parts on top of the car. You can buy a 172 for that money probably if you give it a couple of years. Plenty of 19-20 year ols on here with 1*2s, so insurance must be do-able!

  Golf GTI 1.8T
it was worth doing for the look when the 172's were first out and cost a lot more than a 1.2 but now it would be a waste of money. for the same price I bought my 1.4 at 2 years ago I could now buy a 172. see what I mean.

yeh im doing internet searches on insurance... lol my mum has 21 yers no claims ill go on her insurance can i ask you all a question... 172... whats your personal favourite colour

  AMV8, Mk1 Golf
dont go on your mums insurance, no one will like you, your breaking the law and a few ppl may throw rocks at you

Thats actually illegal I believe.

(If you were being serious about that?)

A good trick is to name her on your insurance as named driver - knocked about £50 off my premium

Don't go on yor mums insurance, iirc it's illegal, or fraud. They will know it's not her car. You won't build up your own no claims that way eithjer, so your insurance will never go down!

As for fave 172 colour - flame red! :)

I hate insurance.

It really all depends on age to be fair & how long you have had your licence

When it comes to building a 172 replica.............I wouldn't bother mate. I personally think a nicely modified non RS Clio can look just as good.
In the same way that making an Escort look like a Cossie, or an MR2 look like a Ferrari, its just no cricket.

Why not go for a euro looking, smooth it, colour code it and lower it. Thats just me though. :D

  haw-he-haw, une-sept-deux
i can see what you mean about when they were new etc, because of the difference in price.

But now, I cant see why people do this. how much were you going to pay for the car to modify? £3000? and then say £1500 for the plastic bits and wheels and what not? you could get a mk 1 172 for ~£3500, which leaves you with a grand for insurance?

p.s after you have 5 years no claims it doesnt make any more difference

hmmm right... well to save up that money would take a long long time and buy the time id saved it id rather have summit eles but at the end of the day if i still have a clio 1.2 which is worth 3000.... then... it doesnt matter cos i wont have it for ever and its no illigal to go on ur mums insurance!

Wouldnt it be best to keep the VTR insted of getting a 1.2 clio? Although i love clios i would have a VTR insted (If i could afford insurance)

Exactly, surely you'd be better keeping the 1.6 instead of going down to a 1.2. Vtrs are great fun little cars, personally I think you'd be better to wait til you can afford a 172, as they're good cars because of the engine, not for the looks!

Its your car at the end of the day.Make it look like what you want. A rs clio would be £4500+£1900 insurance each year a replica would be £2000+£1000 mods+£400 insurance i know what id do!There are many reps of the ph2 on here and all look great espicialy dutty's.There are no ph-quicks reps that i know of apart from vinny.Mine will be done soon and i think matta a ph-quick :)

  car? need a license 1st!
To my knowledge, it isn't illegal to be covered under someone else's insurance. I was on my mum's insurance for the first year to keep costs down.. Since when has this been illegal?

If you DO go on ur mum's insruance, get her to switch to Direct Line - they allow named drivers to build up a NCB, so you can get cover, and discount..

The best colour for a 172/182:

I'm torn between two colours Flame Red & Liquid Yellow easily the best colours in a clio sport :)

As for the topic - building a 172 replica, it sounds good.. but really mate to be honest, you're better off saving up the money, runnnig the vtr for a bit longer and then buying a PROPER 172.. You can't guarantee that you'll get everything spot on doing a replica..

REPLICA'S ARE GAY U FAGGOT.. BUY THE REAL DEAL.

I still dont understand why you want to go from a VTR to a clio 1.2...are you sure its not a 1.1 VTR lookalike? :rasp:
