If its not the dephaser......?

  Clio Sport 182
Hi Guys....

Any suggestions?

I have a 182 that started making an awful rattle after 100 miles down the motorway last week.

After a lot of searching, mainly on this forum, and listening I convinced myself it was the dephaser. Heavy rattle/knock at around 2k revs, phases out at higher revs, gets louder when shes warmed up.

So I put her up in the garage and changed it, only to fire back up last night and after a couple of minutes the dreaded noise is back, this time accompanied by a lighter tap (more like a tappets rattle). Grrr. oh and she won't idle now either...

Any ideas on what it else it could be, I've tested the dephaser solenoid too, just to make sure the oil was getting to it, it seems fine.

BTW, she was running a bit low on oil just before this happened, as an aside, how much oil do these burn in normal running? I've had her about a year an regularly have to top up as she burns it but just wondering how much is normal..

Thanks in advance for any advice

It could well be the tappets making the noise, but if you're near a specialist on here or a competent garage I would advise taking it to them for a second opinion.

Obviously, without hearing the noise it could be numerous things causing it.

As for burning oil, something's not quite right there. Mine uses nothing between its yearly service and I cover around 5k miles.

Had the same problem myself, found it to be the alternator bearing. Bought a second hand alternator and job done.

I run the 172 for about 10k a year and it burns about a litre in that time absolute max, I don't usually need to top up as the oil gets changed then anyway

After a strip down at the weekend I've found the source of my noise.... Big End bearings don't look so pretty any more :( hopefully I've caught it soon enough its not done any damage to the crank.

id never use a crank that had a spun bearing on it, the heat transfer will have been likely caused damage, i don't like regrinds either but i bet you can get a decent 2nd hand crack cheap enough

I just happen to have one sat under my work bench all wrapped up and ready to "go"

It came from a running car btw that was broken for parts. I foolishly fell for a sob story and broke the head from the B/E for a guy and as the B/E was in my way I scrapped the block (but pulled the crank/rods and pistons before).

I will need to measure it up and report back to be 100% sure its good but if you're interested make me an offer and I'll let you know the sizes.
