Immobiliser problem!

Well on Thursday, I went to my local pharmacy, got back into the car and turned the key and nothing, no sound just a click from the fuse box, some times it will turn over but nothing. At first i thought it could be either the starter motor or a worn battery. Called the insurance breakdown service and they arrived and took me to my local garage.

The red alarm light on the dial doesnt go off when you turn the key so something isnt right. They "fixed" the car and i had it back by Friday afternoon. They said it had an imobiliser problem and they had reset the system and cleaned a few wires. I drove it around Friday night and for some reason it keeps on locking itself when im driving!

So tonight what happened? well i was 15 miles from home and yes it failed again, the god damn immobilser wont let me start the car, the red light just doesnt go out. So i phoned the breakdown service again and got the same guy as last time, he tried fixing it by locking the car and opening the bonnet up and setting the alarm off but nothing it wont start. So its been towed home and will go back to the garage on Monday.

You guys have any idea whats wrong with it? I personally think this is a job for the money grabbing Renault dealer as they have all the diagnostic equipment. God i hate cars at the moment!

I had this same problem.

I needed a new key. It turned out that the receiver in the car wasnt picking up the signal to deactivate the immobiliser from the key, as something on the chip in the key was faulty.

New keys, including programming cost upto £150 and only available at a dealer.


Does the light stay solid when you turn the key or does it flash quicker?

i think the solid light means it read the code incorrectly, while the quicker flashing light means it didnt read it at all.

Yeh it just stays on when i turn on the ignition. I have another spare key and will try that, thanks.
