In desperate need of help

  2004 clio 182
I bought my clio 182 on Saturday ( see my hello post for details ) and it's got all these lights on the dash, the eml is I think from it being decatted as it's always on, ignore the battery light as it wasn't running when the pic was taken, the others including the esp light ( not lit in the pic but normally is ) aren't on when the car starts and take around two mins or a mile of driving to appear then if you restart the car the have gone off and take the same amount of time to come back on.

im really stuck here, I've ordered a fault code reader and reset tool but the mot ( which was supposed to be for a year ) runs out in two weeks and I've no idea where to start looking.

any help gratefully received

Why did you buy a car with 2 weeks mot?

Your first port of call is to get it plugged in to a proper diagnostic machine. Those crappy code readers are fine for resetting lights or pointing you in the general direction, but not really any good for pin pointing specific diagnostics.

I didn't, it's complicated but it's all in my post entitled hi clio 182 owner here in the general discussion forum.

i can't really go to a " proper diagnostic machine " hence me buying a decent quality code reader, I've got to wait till Wednesday for it to be delivered though.

So you've asked for advice, i've given you advice, and you've chosen to ignore that advice and do what you were planning on doing in the first place.

You'll fit in well round here. Blend right in in fact!

Actually I'd bought a code reader yesterday, I have mental health issues so taking it to a garage is very difficult. If you had read my post you would have notice i put I've ordered one already.

thanks for the nice post though, really helps being moaned at for not doing as told.

What are you going on about?

You asked for advice, I gave you advice, you ignored it.

A generic code reader will not help you to pinpoint the faults your car is having. You are wasting your time and money. If you think my advice is unhelpful then I can only apologise, but it's fact.

May be worth looking into getting someone mobile to come out to it and do the diagnosis if going to a garage isn't something you can do easily. I'd take a guess at an issue with an ABS sensor or ring; however, unless you know what you're doing you're likely to end up at a garage to get that fixed anyway. Unfortunately without someone who knows what they're looking for, and seeing it in the flesh, it's hard to say. The code reader will unlikely give you the answer, probably just a clue as Mr.Potato rightly said.

tomhunt85, thanks I'll get the speed rings and sensors cleaned and checked tomorrow. At least it's somewhere to start for now.. All I wanted was some ideas of what to look for so thank you.

The fault code reader I've ordered is a snapon modis ultra, I could have gone down the renault specific route but as I change car brands often I didn't see it as a worthwhile expense, I still have the £800 saab/vauxhall dealer setup up from my last car gathering dust. But if it doesn't do the job I'll pay someone to take it to a garage for me, last time a mobile company came out to a car for me I ended up in hospital for three days after a panic attack made me black out and crack my skull open lol
MrPotato telling me not to buy a code reader after I've already said I've bought one then moaning at me for buying one isn't helpful no, your advice is very welcome and I thank you for it but don't have a go because I can't follow it, if I could time travel back to Saturday and not buy the code reader I would lol anyway I don't want an argument about a code reader :)

Got my mum taking it to srs tomorrow for me, abs rings look almost new, cleaned the sensors too but nothing changed. didn't get time to look at the brake light switch today, I will have a look in the morning before she takes it though

thanks for the advice :)

Spoken like a man of experience. Pmsl

If it has a different steering wheel on, it could be the steering angle sensor (I think its called), but if you're getting professionals to look at it, hopefully its something trivial and won't cost too much.

Stop f**king around, you bought it from a trader, get it back to them and get it fixed. Point out the lack of MOT as described in the MOT.

Getting your mum to take it back will have the trader walking all over you, you're an adult, you are old enough to drive, stand on your own feet and sort this out.

Quite frankly go stick your head up your ars@. You know nothing about me or what I go through, most days stepping foot at the door to the end of the road is a struggle. If you don't know what your on about then get lost. People wonder why mental health issues are still not openly discussed, that attitude is why ! Don't you think if it was a matter of " standing on my own feet " I'd have bloody done it years ago instead of suffering daily ! Oh and as for being old enough to drive, erm I'm 35 so yeah but unfortunately you don't just grow out of mental illness.
Daniel, it ended up going to CPR auto, a renault specialist in Coventry. All that came up is " top oxygen sensor circuit open and drivers airbag open circuit open req's rotary switch behind wheel " so ill do those then see what happens. hopefully that will sort it. Been in contact with the previous owner, he's shocked it didn't come with any receipts, he's spent a fortune doing work to it, including a full service, belts and de phaser pulley, front brake disks and pads. The lights were on when he traded it in and he told the guy about them.

Why did it go to cpr auto in cov when srs is in the same town as you?

My mind has been blown

  2004 clio 182
Purely the fact it was more than £15 cheaper to plug it in.

Got out the new lambda sensor, £34 from euro car parts, struggling to find a decent priced airbag ring though.

  2004 clio 182
Well I've ordered a new airbag sensor ring squib and a steering angle sensor as it look dodgy, screws missing a crack in the cover ect. I'd rather replace both now and be 100%

the lambda sensor was a right pig! I got it undone with some plusgas easing the way but I struggled like hell to get my hands in to undo the plug and put the new plug in. 20 mins to do the sensor and a bloody hour to disconnect and reconnect the plug.

i noticed the second sensor wires were tucked out the way, no sensor connected...

It's annoying me too, I've reported it to trading standards now. There is only so much I'm able to do or get done for me, which just depresses me even more to the point where I end up either feel suicidal or go into a rage and damage things. At least while I'm doing the work it needs I'm keeping my mind occupied and giving me a sense of achieving something.

im keeping all the bills and will provide them to trading standards in the hopes I get reimbursed in the end.

  172 Turbo
Trading standards won't do anything as you've not given the garage a chance to repair.

You need to stop touching it and get it back, you've still got the mot issue. Even if you don't take it back, find someone who can and get it back, however, as you've started to repair it, you may now be screwed anyway.

You need to think of it like another piece of equipment, if your TV broke, would you start repairing it or would you take it back?

  2004 clio 182
Well after sending him this

Ok I've tried to sort this in an amicable way, I've tried to call and message you. I've told you I don't want to return the car I just want this mot issue sorted.

You leave me no choice tomorrow I shall be reporting you to the trading standards, the police and to ebay.

If you thought I would just let this drop I'm afraid your wrong. All I want is either the car moting like your add stated it was or a contribution towards getting it through an mot. I don't think I'm asking to much.

ive finally had a response, he's taking it for an mot on Wednesday. Quite why it's had to resort to threats I don't know. Why not just do that from the begining grrr.

Glad you've managed to kind of get it sorted mate.

  2004 clio 182
Well it's back for the mot, I've got a fair few reasons it will fail....

No cat
cv joint gone, missing clip on boot and graunching
passengers head light not working ( ballast and ignitor broken )
horn not working
Dash lights on ( although only after the car has been driven )

thats the few thing I can see.

but my reason for posting is I had it hooked up to clip, at a renault specialist. It's bought up a few faults, airbag ring sensor, lambda sensor plus a steering angle sensor, I've replaced all these, the airbag and engine management light is now off. I had it hooked back up and the steering angle sensor setup to the car. This turned off the other lights, esp, abs brake stop and service. For about three miles, then they came back on, I had it hooked back up and he had to set the angle sensor again, another three miles and the lights came back again. He said it sounded like a lose wire somewhere as the only thing that kept showing up was steering angle sensor.

im not sure where to start looking, the only wires I can find are the ones that plug into the back of the sensor, do these only fit one way or could they be twisted ?

thanks all

Sounds like you're getting there so fair play for continuing with it, as for the wiring problem sadly I cannot help.

You could probably pick up a cat from on here, same with ballast and ignitor, and probably the horn too :).

  2004 clio 182
No not yet, he's still working on it apparently. I messaged him yesterday and just got back " will let you know when it's ready "

  2004 clio 182
Well I went and picked up the car from the garage, the guy wasn't even there, he just left the mot on the passenger seat and the key under the visor.

Now I'd looked on the vosa website so I knew it had failed on the left headlight not working, there being no cat, the cv joint not being attached and the emissions.

First thing I did was to look at my headlights, he's took the hid/xenons out and put in some ropey looking standard ones in, he appears to have done a bodge job on the wiring as when the indicators flash the fog light bulb flashes on the dash. I've sent him a message and he " says " he will return my headlights.

he hasn't put a cat on, there was old sealant on the joins when I dropped it off and it was impossible to remove the decat pipe without removing the sealant. So he's bribed the mot tester to put it through, which to be honest I would have done too lol but I'm not a car trader and he shouldn't be doing things like that. Also I'm 99.9% sure the wheel bearing has gone and should have been picked up at mot time.

so the car is back, I've still got to get a ballast for the passenger headlight, a bonnet ( which I knew before I bought the car ) find out why the esp, abs, stop and serv lights won't stay off, do the wheel bearing and cv joint, tidy up the wheels, touch up various scratches and reseal the exhaust, then maybe enjoy driving the damn thing.

thanks for all the help received so far and for all the help to come in the future.

The fog light flashing with other lights is a symptom of corroded contacts on the tail lights. Unscrew the cluster from the car, pull out the connector and clean up the contacts with a needle file.
