induction kit - question

why is the i.k (pic) open at the top? would it not be more affective if was sealed in? Could i make something up to fit over the open part and fit another air feed, or would this do any harm, ie is there a specific reason why it is open? cheers for any help.http://www.angelfire.com/or3/derv/airfilter.jpg

its open so you get the induction roar, if it was sealed(like the factory fitted) it would make little or no noise.

when ive been driving around, then put my hand on the air filter it is quite warm, nick hill is quite hard sometimes to get in contact with, i thought i might try the brainies on this site first!

yea sois mine mate, although mines a K&N and hasnt got anything that resembles a heat shield. Nick hill is easier to contact between 5.30 and 6pm mate.

Yes, much more effective. IMHO I think it is a disappointing design. I had one for a week before selling it. Standard airbox with a K&N filter gives better performance. If you want the noise, keep it, but it will suck in lots of hot air from the engine bay. The amount of cooler air coming from the narrow "cold air feed" will be rendered useless by the huge amount of hot air sucked in from the huge opening at the top.

I made a sealed shield out of plastic and gaffer tape, but that looked sh*te so I gave up on it as a bad job and put the airbox back.

huh???? where did you get that from! lol

Nick answered it a while ago, its was a cost issue, it could be done but at a much higher cost, which he felt was not worth it.

No comment on performance as i have not seen/tried/compared one.

The initiall reason for bringing out an induction kit was demand for one by you lot out there, so you would have induction roar with a gain in performance. The gain in performance is due to a freear flowing air filter and the roar from not having a completely sealed box. Granted the hole at the top will draw in some hot air, but no where near as much as some of the other (open) induction kits on the market. We saw that there is a need to get more cold air to the filter and to this end have made a scoop to fit in front of the passanger wheel which sits just below the bumper line and scoops cold air up to the ind housing. One problem you will always have with this is that the car needs to be moving to scoop the air. I personally think that a better option would be to remove the passanger side fog lamp and feed cold air from there. I have looked at the possibilities of the little blank to the side of the lamp but if anyone cares to take of there bumper to see where abouts you can feed any decent sized air pipe is welcome to have a look. The reason we have not yet made a fog lamp scoop is demand, a lot of people do not want to remove the lamp because it upsets the look of the car I say what do you want a faster car or one that looks symetrical. YOU TELL ME IS THERE A DEMAND?

As far as a fully sealed air box goes fitting a free flow performance air filter will also gain power and coupled with some sort of better cold air feed will more than likely give power gains similar to the ind kit. One problem with this against an open kit is that the air feed needs to be higher than under the bumper, should you drive through a flood. We decided that we would not make a fully sealed kit as the Renault version works and the Ramair filter we supply as a direct replacement is £41.13 inc vat retail. So there we have it Ive just blown away the induction kit thery.

Ultimately its the old saying. You pay your money you take your choise.

I got one of these on mine at the moment. I have also made a sealed unit too.

I ran my hill power one with the cold air feed at the bottom and also a cold air feed from the grille into the top. Not that big a feed but I tested with a digital thermometer the temp and with the top air feed the temperature is a lot cooler when moving.

Nick how much is the cold air scoop thing? AS I dont have that? I would be interested in a scoop that fits in the foglight? I have actually made drawings of one etc as I made my air box design for a uni project and I thought about doing that myself.

Oh and Derv I bought Rhyss Hill power Kit. I have his home made top thing which isnt a bad idea actually but could do with another cold air feed fitting into the top. I was gonna try it out on mine the other day but my dog chewed up the one that Rhys made! Bloody dog! Think itll fix though hehe.

Well my brother is a very good design student so as soon as I get mine he will be looking at the cold air issue. He keeps suprising me with the quality of the stuff he makes aswell. So if he comes up with something practical I will let you know.

for an rt you would get the one at the top of the page like the one on the valva. not sure if its worth the money but it gives a nice bellowing roar!

oh and it looks cool too and people go "f**kin ell thats a big kit!" (wel, tis for a small 1.4 engine anyway)

over the summer i might try and put a bit more of a shield around the filer element but not seal it off completly and see about getting that scoop. To be honest i havent noticed any difference in performance at all, but it does get peoples heads turning when i boot it down the road! I was just a bit worried on how warm the filter was getting after a long hard drive.
