Insurance claim - not all mods declared!

  RenaultSport clio 172 mk2
Hi all,

My friend crashed his 172 this morning. The recovery vehicle has taken it to their pound, which is where it is now. He's insured fully comp, but not all mods are declared.

The exhaust and wheels are declared, but not the induction kit. He didn't realise the induction kit was fitted when he bought the car so didn't declare it. He was going to declare it though, just never got round to it.

Any advice on this?

It's been suggested he goes and removes it before the assessor gets there, but he's got nothing to replace it with.

What are the insurance company likely to do and say?

Cheers

some companys wont check it and others will not pay any out cos my mate crashd his dare i say it saxo and he didnt declare any of his mods but it was only the induction kit they were worried about. i dont think that hes getting claimed against but its not good if they check it.

Any ideas which will and won't check? Or the likelihood?

I think it was NIC, flux, elephant or tesco. Can't remember though. Was one of the popular ones for hot hatches.

id get him to take it off.

When i crashed my punto, has loads of mods not declared, but b4 the truck took it away i ripped off the induction kit. they never questioned why there was not airbox, i guess they though it had fallen out when i crashed it.

Make sure he does not say he didnt get round to declaring it.

Insurance companies make a decision on the reason the customer gives, hes best to say something like ' i didnt think an induction kit would need to be declared, why would i have declared my other mods and not that?' they willl probs make him pay extra and then do the claim

I work for Tesco and thats what we tend todo, unless no 3rd party was involved then we would just void.

I would go and visit it in the compound. (say theres some stuff in it he needs!!) Wont be difficult to pick up an airbox from a breakers. I would always get my motor dropped at home and then moved later, especially if it was a questionable write off!!

Yeah just whip the induction kit off at the yard they probably won't even care (The yard) just lucky he's declared his zaust etc.. as he might look a bit funny with one sticking out his bag after visiting his car to get his credit card or however he blaggs it.

Induction kits should lower premiums, as they often make the car slower, and never faster without other mods to complement them. IK's are the biggest rip-off the tuning industry has ever invented IMHO.

I had my Nova SRI stolen years ago. This was lowered on standard 14'' anthracite wheels so was on it ass. Had an Astra GSI vent smoothed into the back of the bonnet facing forward (like a scooby vent but offset), flushed tailgate, Manta 400 mirrors, decat stainless and IK. None of this was declared. I went to the compound and removed all the bits I could (exhaust tailgate etc) and just left it. I even put a white tailgate on it when the car was blue LOL.
I just wrote in a little book at the compound 'removed standard exhaust' and that was that. No issues.

A long time ago I had a bump in the xr3i, a guy went into back of me. Thing is though it had an rs turbo engine and suspension. The assesor looked under bonnet for the vin plate info but never mentioned the T3 turbo staring him in the face!!

pmsl - quality !!!

if they can find a way of not paying out they will. Hopefully he will learn from this & 'get round' to declaring all mods. If I was from the insurance co I would be looking not to pay out & I bet they know every trick in the book.

Whip it off quick & throw the old airbox in the space.

If you had a crash, could you get ur car delivered to your home instead of a pound? or can you choose the garage, etc?

In theory the car is ur property, so I'm guessing you can ask for it to be delivered to your house?!?!

Anybody got an answer?

Yeah you can get it delivered to your house or anywhere really. The big problem is if your in hospital as a result its gonna be tricky to remove mods.

My theory is, if I'm hospitalised, then I'll be so glad I'm alive to care about paying out money... life is priceless, but however much someone sues you for... well, its just money.

Retract the above statement if you slam into a Mercades SLR ^_^
