Insurance.. declare or not declare.. that is the question

lol

You give them far more credit than they deserve m8..

you seem to think they are LOOKING to void a claim or policy, they aint..

its like this..

you pays yer money..

you have a bump..

you claim..

they MAY come to check the car for damage.. NOT TO CHECK FOR CHANGES.. the assessor is in existence to make sure that the repairer is paid an appropriate amount, and that, if the vehicle is in need of write off, it WILL be written off..

no more... no less.

Like all things, there ARE extremes..

If someone has a 1.2 nova and it looks like it ram raided halfords and had been max-powered all over.. apart from laughing, this may raise a few eyebrows, and rightly so.

but, providing you are sensible. there are no issues to consider.

you void your insurance if you speed, if you want to take it to the extreme..

Joe.

Ok, as ive enhanced my Impreza a little bit im quite clued up here (which makes a change )
Wheels...
I have Prodrive 17 inch alloys on my car, they cost me extra due to the fact they are not a standard part of the car (but they are a dealer accessory!)
Brakes...
Ive upgraded to a 305mm Brembo set up with AP discs, cost me nothing as it improved the cars ability to stop but some insurance companies see this as the opposite
Exhaust & Back box, ecu and intercooler piping (PPP) Dealer option, cost me approx 10% more on my insurance with 20% increase in power
Decat down pipe (sports one )
Cost me extra.
Air filter.
Havnt got one but looked into it before i found out they naff me MAF sensor up, wouldnt cost me anything as its consumable.
Fuel
oh well, consumable, the car drinks the stuff but the engine prefers the higher octane of Optimax due to the ECU being mapped for 97 ron fuel
Clear indicators.... dont have any but would have to declare even though they are a dealer accessory due to them changing the exterior of the car.
Side protection strips.... nope didnt need to declare these
Security...
They wernt bothered!
(the reason being is they know that these cars will be protected ) Ahhhhh i love LV
Spoilers... got the standard one on, if i uprated then yes i would have to declare it

Basically, consumable parts (sparkplugs, leads, oil, filter etc) which are within the recommended spec (ie dont add that much power) aint a problem, Brakes can be if you add different combinations that dont improve your car but do the opposite due to the fact they are not up to the job need to be declared (and its a safety issue along with suspension and strut braces as it alters the way the car handles).
Hope that helps

Tony

Should also say that if you uprate your clutch you should declare it, even though they may not charge you for it (ie something like an AP organic type )

chevyboy - tiz sweet.

captn - all i am trying to highlight is by the BOOK i am correct.

i am trying to show you that no matter what alterations you make, your insurance company can use that against you. without question.(read your terms and conditions, there not printed just to pad out your insurance pack) the fact that you feel that you can get away with this, and get away with that,(whilst most times you will be lucky enough to be correct) it is not always going to be the case and YOU will become unstuck at some stage!

It just worries me after hearing you someone reading this has suddenly thought bo//ox to letting them know about my nos, induction, cams, wheels, brakes, boot spoiler, quads etc and getting dropped in the sh*te because of it!

Although listening to most they have (in my opinion) quite a good sense of whats declarable and whats not!

whats not being THE FOREST FRESH MAGIC TREE of course oh, and your new CARBON EFFECT BEADDED TURBO SEAT COVER or what ever it was.

think we might never meet on this on mate!

TB1 - the company insuring the scoob above has made no additional charges for the wheels, tyres or headlamps!

As weve been told these are pro-drive subaru approved parts.

Yup My alloys are also Subaru approved accessories (PD7s) which are a prodrive alloy (thus having Prodrive down the side and a Prodrive center cap ) but due to the fact they cost 1300 quid for 4 they charged me extra, now if your saying that the 18 inch alloys costing 1800 quid for 4 were accepted by the insurance company for no extra cost!!! id be a bit dubious!
(unless the insurance co has added them to the value of the car??) and the headlights wouldnt make a difference anyway
Basically what Direct line did to me (before i changed to LV and saved 300 quid ) was ask for the cost of all my modifications, ie alloys, PPP, Brakes and downpipe, then charged me accordingly, LV on the otherhand took the lot into consideration and consolidated it all so it makes me a happy man

Its down to the individual. Yes its likely that most of the time you will get away with less obvious mods even if you crash it. You only need to stack it into a tree once, and then be left with not much of what used to be thousands of pounds worth of car, before you will realise that maybe you should have declared those alloy wheels, that the insurance will claim affected your handling. If an accident isnt even your fault and you cant claim because of mods, youll be even more gutted.

It depends on your circumstances and what sort of a driver you are. If declaring mods is gonna price you out of insuring your car then youve just got to drive carefully and hope no-one crashed into you. If you can afford to declare mods and want to know youre fully covered if the worst happens, then pay the extra. I suspect a lot of us are in the middle ground where its difficult to decide whether to declare or not...as I say, its up to each individual what they do, you pay your money, you take your choice.

Just on a side note though, these days on the roads, its probably cheaper not to tax or insure your car though, in fact even better if you havent ever taken a driving test...no licence to endorse, having no tax will save you £150 a year and council traffic wardens dont care anyway judging by the amount of dumped cars you see everywhere, if you ever get busted for no tax or insurance its only a £300 fine anyway, a lot cheaper than what I pay now for tax/insurance!

Nick, your last sentence is OK until you have an accident where it is your fault! The other driver might try to sue you for thousands of pounds, especially if he/she is injured as well as a written off car!

hee hee.. I loved this thread ..

ok, to sum up.. this is what its all about...

you are MAD to declare EVERYTHING to the insurance gestapo... raving infact.. totally space cadet mode...

you are MAD to declare NOTHING .. IF the car is blatently modified (Mainly body kits, but that is so old hat anyways)

You are MAD to NOT delare items which you cannot afford to loose or replace in an accident

You are SENSIBLE and PRUDENT to NOT declare mods that are not easily detectable...

there ya go...

Joe

Like you said Joe,

Ive declared my exhaust, lowered suspension and uprated brakes!
Thats all you can see apart from the air filter which can be easily swapped over.

Mat.

"You are SENSIBLE and PRUDENT to NOT declare mods that are not easily detectable..."

what authority is confirming this?????

easy, the same authority that makes you non concerned about doing 1 mph over any speed limit, the same authority that allows you to borrow pens and such like from work

the same authority that allows you to drink alcohol before your 18th birthday.. etc etc

Best bet is to do all the mods and then keep your car permanently locked in a garage and never drive it.

BTW Sylvia you realised I was joking didnt you? Saying that though, I know someone whos been crashed into by an uninsured, untaxed motor. The only winner was the bloke who was driving their old shed illegally cos it didnt make any difference to them as they drove off.

Yes Nick, I didnt really think that a schoolteacher would encourage the young lads here not to insure their cars! It would be much cheaper just to pay a £300 fine if caught, than £1,000 insurance though!
