Insurance for engine swap

  182, SQ7, Trafic
I'm doing the 172/16v engine conversion and need to kow a few things.

I can't insure it as a 2.0 16v yet due to it still being on the V5 as a 1.8 so everything will clash is that right?

Also I've heard that they will now insure my car as a 172? Ths would mean HUGE price increase over the £900 I pay at the moment.

Anyone that's done a legitimate engine swap could you please give some advice?!

Thanks in advance!

Car will be insured as what it is. Valver with engine change and the power increase noted. Needs to be done as soon as the car is on the road or your insurance will be hella invalid. Not sure about what requirements there are for updating the v5.

It's got insurance on it at the moment just so I can use the third party on any car so I can get around!

Will be fully legit when ready!

No. Can't use DOC on a car you own, and it must be fully insured in its own right. You need to declare it the moment it hits public tarmac.

"other car"?

The car with the engine change needs to be correctly insured in its own right (ie with any mods declared) in order for anyone to drive it whether using their own DOC or on a policy specifically for that car. There is no way around it mate. If there is an engine change and it touches the road and this has not been declared to its insurer, it will be uninsured.

I don't think you get exactly what I mean!!!

I had a Punto but wanted to keep insurance so just shifted it onto the clio while it was still being built. It's still in the garage, I just needed TPOAC so I could travel every now and again on a parent's car.

Not someone using the Clio on TPOAC ;)

Yeah, got you wrong, but the policy needs to be set up legit, ie with any mods declared for any part of the policy, including the doc, to be valid. Double check with your insurer, I just know that for the company I work for, your policy will be majorly invalid the moment there is an undisclosed engine upgrade.

Yea I've gathered that, hence why I was asking how to do it legit as not many people do ;)

Indeed. Odds are if the valver is sat in a garage with the wrong engine in it and you are using your doc to drive your parents vehicle then they will never realise, but to do it legit, it should be declared.

Heh, your original question, as I said, it wont be insured as a 172, it will be insured as what it is, ie a valver with an engine change..

Why not just get a 172?

I don't know how much an engine swap costs, but at least then you know what you've got, as do the insurers.
Surely an engine swap is the easiest way to send insurance through the roof? And what about the exhaust system, brakes, bigger brakes, suspension and so forth?

iirc you need to call the DVLA and amend the v5

they will also alter the co2 rate and adjsut the tax band :(

Adrian Flux seems to be good for engine swaps I found. Must be 1000's of cars which are insured with the previous engines though.

ben_p your insurance must be killer with everything declared

co2 rate isnt on the v5's of any cars before Aug 2001 mate, so I dont think that would be an issue?!
