Intermittent wipers

Is it just my 172 or do they all do this?

When I have the wipers on intermittent they vary in speed without changing the speed setting... They seem to automatically speed up when it rains harder? Do they have auto wipers? It's a 53 plate.

I'm now very impressed.. And also a little Intrigued as to how it knows!! I'm guessing it's something to do with that square on the windscreen at the bottom which is a slightly different colour.
