iPhone 3G restriction passcode help

I'm just about to sell my sons iPhone 3G but need to reset it, and to do this we need to know the restriction passcode. He never set the restriction passcode and in the short time he's had the phone he's never sync'd it to his laptop.

We got the phone off his auntie who has told us what her pin number used to be, but that doesn't work either.

Can anyone help???

I think the best option is DFU mode. It should allow you to plug it in, open up iTunes and do a software update which will wipe it without the need for the passcode.
