ipod connection to standard cd player?

  Silver 182 F/F
Get a Dension kit,it works with the steering wheel controls. It plugs into the back of your HU where the multi-changer would connect. Then what happens is your 1-6 buttons on the HU become your playlist's 1-5 are the first five play list on the i-pod pressing button 6 allows you to select the remainder of your i-pod playlist's using the fastforward or rewind controls.

Lots of people say that you are better getting a Connects 2 kit which does the same but is cheaper,i got the Dension kit for £100 and in my opinion looks more a complete job than the connects 2 which as a big metal box which you have to try and hide somewhere and doesn't come with a cradle.

Also if you looking at a Dension kit make sure you get the new version which only came out a couple of months ago.

This is were i got mine from.
http://www.gadget-and-gizmos.co.uk/dension-icelink-plus-renault-update-list-p-177.html

Ref fitting.do it your self it's really easy, what i did was srew the cradle into the fascia that holds the hazzard/doorlock/heater screen switches then got a replacment from Reno for £14 for when i sell the car,it makes it look a better job than using one of those brackets that won't damage your car.

Connects2 Adaptor ARNIPOD003 available from Halfords for £85.

Does exactly the same as the Dension kit (which uses connects2's box too) and it cheaper. Not sure what Bruce is talking about with regard to a "big metal box" lol, its the same as the Dension kit therefore both connectors will fit easily into the recess above the glove box (take stero out, theres a big space on the left).

Whichever way you go im sure you'll be happy, as im delighted with my Conects2 kit and just used my ipod tunedock which fits neatly into my cupholder placement below the AC/CC controls. Also means the iPod is not easily visible from outside so your less likely to get your window smashed if you forget to take it out.

so the stalk controls the volume and does if defo control track fwd and back track selection?

what is displayed on the radio display?

i have a ipod mini and Dension do a dock connector instead of the cradle holder. so the ipod can be hidden... Does this charge the ipod too?

  SLK 350
Does it charge the iPod? Yes the connects2 and dension both charge.

Does it use display? Yes it does, but it won't display track names, as this is a limitation of the display system/HU. It will display track number though.

Stalk controls work? Yes the stalk works perfectly for volume and track navigation.

As for the control box, well its about 2 inches by 1 inch so its not really an issue and as said, it tucks away perfectly - so indeed a non-issue.

thanks ozzyo99! cant decide, could pop to halfords tomorrow and order ARNIPOD003

or can get dension ice link plus online from where bruce said.

Does the ARNIPOD003 just have a ipod dock connector to go in the bottom?
The IceLink comes with a connector of your choice so dont need to buy a holder unlike ARNIPOD003

  SLK 350
Yes it has a connector (just like the standard connector) that slots straight into the bottom. Personally unless you want to be drilling holes in your dash id just get the Connects2 kit. But if your not bothered about the holes then go with the Dension i would think.

Thats my setup.

Well connects2 seems simplest, and seeing we all have spare space for the 2"x1" matchbox may aswell go for it.

connects2 dont seem to sell it as good as Dension, Dension say it has microprocessors n stuff to make mp3 sound crystal clear.

i guess the connects 2 is as good as CD?

*looking on google for ARNIPOD003 and the rrp of the connector is £169!!! cheapest i can find is £108 + del :(

i saw an advert for Halfords today on the telly, they advertise the Ipod car kit for £99 fitted & the picture shows a Denison? anyone else seen this?

I'm still deciding whether to get one & keep the standard HU or get an Alpine HU with the ipod adapter.. Hmmm

Yea that halfords advert is for the Dension Ice Link FM

that is a FM transmittor based link (FM radio quality sound)

whereas they also sell the IceLink PLUS which is £249 - crystal clear CD sound/can control ipod functions etc and use existing steering control.

As for the alpine etc, i really cannot decide either! just get dension ice link plus (£99 online)or get the alpine ipod pack, plus you will need the renault connect 2 adaptor to keep steering control...and then will they change the track on ipod? who knows!

  Silver 182 F/F
To some things up,if there was a lot of money difference between Connects and Dension,i'd go for the cheaper Connects but seeing you can get the Dension for £15 more without having to buy a holder and both do the same thing, but the dension just looks more of a finished kit.
http://www.dension.com/icelink_info.htm which would you buy?

I think i don't need to give you a answear

P.S you don't have to drill holes in either,it's just how i chose to do it,to make it look more like a profesional instalation instead of something just laying about.

And how can Halfords ask for £250 for something you can buy off the net for £99

God i think my last surname must be Dension:clown:

try an itrip it uses fm channels and cheap to buy . you can get them off ebay it's called the griffin itrip about 35.00 deliverd

  A4 Avant & A3
Your absolutely corrcet Bruce182.. that £99 at Halfords is the FM modulator! robbing bar-stewards!

Think i might go with the £99 ice link you got..
next dilemma... do i get the cradle & fix it to the dash.. or the dock connector and keep it stored away in the glovebox.. decisions decisions! (if i had the dock connector & the ipod in the glove box, would the cable be long enough for me to pull the ipod out to change albums (if i wanted something other than a playlist)

That link, http://www.gadget-and-gizmos.co.uk/product_info.php?products_id=177{1}3
Free delivery on orders over £100 & the denison is £99.99.. typical! trying to search for the cheapest thing on there.. to add (wonder if they sell penny chews!)

  Silver 182 F/F
You really need to see your ipod screen when searching through playlist's i would mount it in view, when you park up if you leave the ipod backlight always on it reminds you too remove it.And with the Dension cradle it slides in and out with ease no need to press the clip in,like on connector cables.

  SLK 350
So Bruce if you don't drill holes how exactly do you secure it without the need for buying another cradle?

And you state that the new panelling is £14 so really the price is £113 unless you sell it with the car. Seems a lot of hassle given you can just spend £1 and get some self adhesive velcro and velcro it anywhere you wanted, and still for £86.

Upto you at the end of the day though folks, you can't lose with either solution. Just down to personal perference/money.

  Silver 182 F/F
ozzyo don't get upset mate, what i was saying is,i attached the cradle that comes with the Dension kit using two screws then i can remove the cradle when selling, the fascia was for when i sell the car, compared to some people who buy aftermarket mounting brackets which are about £15,Your correct in saying you could velcro it on.I could be mistaken but the connects doesn't come with a cradle so for £86 you would be velcroing a loose cable unless you buy a cradle which then would bump up the £86 price?

Bruce perhaps you misunderstood me, but why would i be getting upset lol?

Theres a few options for the velcro route, obviously if you have an iSkin or similar you can pass the velcro through the belt-loop and use that as a holster which obviously is non-permanent and won't scratch your iPod.

But as with anything theres multiple ways of doing every job so as i stated, its down to personal taste and money.

Bruce, what year is your 182? Mine's an 04 so am I right in thinking I need the Dension for the Tuner List and not the Update List?

  Silver 182 F/F
What's it say on your stereo just below the menu button's if its say's update list or tuner list, drop a email to the company that i put a link for they are very helpfull,it's them that told me about the new version Dension. The earlier versions had a tendencey to crash.Mine's a 05 reg with update list.

I think I am going to go for the Dension just with the connector (no cradle) and install it in the Glove box.

With the headunit out, what is there in the way of wiring to be done, boxes etc to be hidden away with the dension?

Cheers

Rich

The Dension has no box it's just two little tube size objects which i fitted on top of the stereo i.e behind the hazzard/doorlock switches.

You could really be doing with seeing the ipod screen for selecting playlist so what i would do is install it first letting it just lay loose, use if for a few days then decide where to fit it.

Mine's the full fat 182 Cabasse, but I've just looked and it does say "tuner list" in small letters at the bottom. Now I know which one I need.

One last question. Can you change track with the iPod navigation when it's connected? Or does it only work with the stereo controls?

My brother's got the Alpine setup and it "locks" the iPod controls so you have to unplug it, change the track and then reconnect it if you want to use the click wheel.

I use the ipod loads here at work so have always got a playlist of the week - so as long as I can start it playing and skip tracks not seeing the pod wont matter to much I hope! But may just leave it in the cup holder first then to get used to it.

This has been very useful. Thanks guys.

So am I right in thinking that the Dension only comes with a cradle, and no way of securing it to the dash? So I will either have to screw it like Bruce182, or buy an after market cradle?

I think I am def going to buy a dension link plus for my gf's Xmas present, just thinking ahead about installing it. It is £149 from Halfrauds installed, but sounds easy enough to install myself.

Caraudioplus classes updated list and tuner list HU's as the same, whereas the gadget site asks whether you have a tuner list or updated list HU. Is there a difference then or not?

Or am I just getting confused?

  Silver 182 F/F
Bezza4. no you can get the kit with just a loose cable,or you can attach the cradle to a aftermarket no damage bracket like it show's on Red Cup's website, these cost about £15 that's why i attached mine to the trim because the trim cost £14 to replace when selling car and i think it looks neater. So you no you don't have to buy a second aftermarket cradle.

The difference between update list or not. i'm not right sure that's why i contacted gadget's site,it was them who told me about the newer version and i just sorted it out with them.

If you get one with a metal box in it your just getting a Connect2 kit Dension used to use there parts for there kit's but the newer version's don't.You should get two little moulded circuit boards. It seem to be a reliability issue and not any extra functions.

well i was following this up until now.

1stly "richard" of gadgets/gizmo emailed me back, i asked 3 questions and he very kindly replied "£7.20 thanks. Richard"

Pretty sure the one from caraudioplus will be right (see my post a couple of posts up).

Has anyone got the ipod 30gb video working through these dension kits, was trying to work out at work (halfords) to understand these things and the one for £99 well what can i say other than my jaw drops!!!!let alone £249 shite!!!
whats the sound quality like?cd quality?

i just bought an alpine set up - its great for playing MP3 but if you have bought an ipod video like me then its crap - you cannot get the sound from any films through the stereo - its cost me about £150 including fitting to get it all sorted when all i needed was a AI Net to Head phone jack for £20 and it would have all worked - admittedly the buttons on the head unit would not have comtrolled the ipod but at least I could have watched and heared films with it.
Stick with the standard stereo and go for the dension set up - all in this has cost me more than £400 including the stereo (Alpine 9853R) and I wish I hadnt bothered and had stuck with the original and just got this dension lead that would have worked everything.
aaaaaarrrrgggggghhhhhhh

  Silver 182 F/F
Sound quality through mine is excellent, the hu seems to handle the bass better than when playing ipod through headphones.
