Is a phs 1 172 reliable???

  Maybe a 172 Cup..
Seem to read story after story of poorly 172's. I know French cars are far from been regarded as bulletproof.I realise some of this is due to how many owners are on here, and also that people are asking for advice when they have issues, but still....

So if you had to rate your cars reliability, where 1 is that your car is as fragile as a Kinder Egg, and 10 is as solid as Jack Bauer, how would you rate yours?

Danny's old one was a 10 for sure!

Mines in its current state is a 4, that will change!!

9 if looked after they are hard to kill. Engine mounts and standard exhausts are the main thing that goes. I've had two and both have been very reliable. My black one i've got now has just flown through its mot with no advisaries even though its on 116k.

Are both high-milage models just posted still on original box and clutch?
Am impressed with scores so far peeps, keep 'em coming!!!

Ps even though I only had my '02 plate for 8 months I'd give it a 9!!

I've had 3 172's and none have costed much at all to keep on the road, touch wood.

Have you looked at many ph1's Aboo?

Not yet Edd. Golf 1.8T to get rid of first. If I can avoid it don't want to set my heart on something if you know what I mean. Could always loan money from bank of dad till mine sells I suppose......hhhmmmm

My MK2 172 is now on 120k, still on the original clutch, gearbox, and I give it hell

Never broken down either, 4.5 years! (touches wood)

I'd give in 9/10

considering i absolutely cane mine everywhere the only things i needed to fix are rear wheel bearings, discs, pads, tyres.
these things are so good i bought another one after my year out travelling.
good on fuel too for a 170bhp 2.0l engine.

so 9

The engines are reliable, in 5 years of RS ownership never had one let me down. They're reliable but thats not to say they'll be without minor niggles or build quality issues.

Sell it to Aboo, he's local.

Who's Aboo ?
Not seen your ad Aluco. Seeing your thread though, think it could be a bit out of my range...

Hi Aboo :rasp:

I haven't made the thread yet, if you're interested though I'm offering it both standard and modified... So you could always go for standard which will be less. Or add a few bits on if you like etc.

PM me if you fancy coming and having a look around it seeing as you're so close mate, I'll even make you a brew (No coffee though, I don't know how to make it properly :()

Had mine a year, no probs other than general service items. For a 10 year old car it's absolutely fine.

Mines been generally good. Never left me stuck anywhere to date.

I wouldn't say a ph1 172 will be any less reliable than a ph2. Fact of the matter is if its been looked after it will look after you. Goes for any of the Renault sport range.

OMG! thats actually quite an achievement in itself! despite you saying its been driven hard its clearly been very well looked after.

I would rate mine at about a 7 but i am very particular about cars and tend to find faults rather than the faults finding me lol if that makes sense

all the stories you read are when something breaks and the owner is asking for help. How often do you post to say "all is well, nothing broke today"
